奇作、そうだな、まさに。

ｶﾚﾝの歌う、ﾐｭｰｼﾞｶﾙ「ｴｳﾞｨｰﾀ」の曲とか
ｶﾝﾄﾘｰ、ｼﾞｬｽﾞ、南部、Man Smart (Woman Smarter)
これなんかﾘﾄﾙﾌｨｰﾄのﾃﾞｨｷｼｰﾁｷﾝみたいで笑えた。

そしてこの音作り(音遊び？)、この時にﾚｵﾝﾗｯｾﾙか
誰かが 関わってたからなのか？それまでの
ｶｰﾍﾟﾝﾀｰｽﾞさが 払拭され、二人の音楽の幅広さも
伝わる。

そして悪いがこれをﾍﾞｽﾄに挙げちゃいたいくらい
ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑとしては楽曲も本当に良いし、ｵﾁｬﾒだが
何より、ｴｲﾘｱﾝのﾗｼﾞｵﾘｸｴｽﾄ(？)から始まる傑作
「星空に愛を」は至高のｽﾍﾟｰｽ・ﾛｯｸ・ﾊﾞﾗｰﾄﾞｗ

米国では唯一廃盤であるという、オリジナル7作目。
しかし彼らの中でも特別に中身の濃い作品ではないでしょうか。

まず特筆すべきはカレンの歌唱で、このアルバムにおける彼女の声は
まさに食べ頃の果実のような蜜の味。
ささやくような1.と8.、軽快な2.5.7.、じっくり聴かせる3.6.、これぞ名唱の4.、
力強く、わずかな間にも様々に表情を変え、しなやかにして伸びやか。
これを聴きもらすにはあまりに惜しすぎます。

対するリチャードの気合も半端ではなく、初期の作品以上に野心的です。
ジャズ、ポップ、ヴォーカル、ミュージカル、カントリー、ジャムセッション、他多彩なアレンジメントは
どれも高い完成度で、前ニ作（HORIZONとA　KIND　OF　HUSH）に欠けていた躍動感を
見事に実現しています。

暑い夏の夜にぴったりのこのアルバム、聴けばカーペンターズのイメージが変わるのは間違いないでしょう！

いわゆるカーペンターズというメロディライン、すなわち、おそらくはカレンの声がメロディそのものであるといった期待感や先入観は、良い意味でうち砕かれるでしょう。それは、一曲目の、こんこんと説くような口調という感じがいきなりの違和感をもたらすところから始まります。２曲目はカレン没後のひとつの小ブームの頃にテレビのＣＭでも使われた聞き覚えのある曲なので、いかにもカーペンターズと思う人が多いかもしれませんが、これこそ、カレンの生前最後のオリジナルアルバムになるメイド・イン・アメリカへの布石に聞こえて切なくなるのは私だけでしようか。実は、６曲目も同じテイストに感じるのです。そして、このアルバムの目印といえばやはり５曲目のSWEET､SWEET SMILEでしょうか。当時小学生だった私は、それまでのカーペンターズからの変化をそれが何かしらないまま受け入れていましたが、この曲と８曲目のCALLING OCCUPANTS･･･だけを毎晩布団の中で、何回も聞いてジーンときていました。小学生のくせに。

　そう、奇作というには、あまりにも欠くべからざるアルバムで、誰かの奇策というにはとても巧妙すぎて、それでもやっぱり彼らにしか出せない世界なのです。
