　カーペンターズの"Close To You"（邦題「遥かなる影」）は1970年8月28日発表のオリジナル・セカンド・アルバムです。"Close To You"はご存知バート・バカラックの作品で、アルバムに先駆けて発売されたセカンド･シングル曲であり、また初めての大ヒット曲でもあります。リチャードが当初この曲を録音するのを嫌がったというのは有名ですが、この曲の素晴らしい出来を聴くと、全く理解できないですね（リチャードはバカラックのファンで、しかもこの後繰り返しバカラック作品を取り上げたのに！）
　このアルバムは、"Close To You"のシングル･ヒットを受けて急いで作られた作品で、この後の「完璧主義」のカーペンターズらしからぬ雑然とした印象が残ります。しかし、偉大なカーペンターズの作品として記憶に残るアルバムと言えるでしょう。
　ちなみに、このアルバムに収録された"Close To You"はシングル・ヴァージョンより長い演奏となっています。
　この名盤を「よくあるベスト盤」と勘違いしている方がいるようです。大嘘ですので、訂正しておきますね。

　ヒット曲を、それも半端じゃないヒット曲を出してしまったために急遽「作られた」アルバムとの話もありますが、彼らの才能は、それぐらいのことでは小さく納まってしまってはいないように思います。ちょうどレコード会社側の売れ線狙いとアーティストとしての堅苦しさが抜群のバランスをとっているような感じです。
　冒頭の「愛のプレリュード」からもう、完全にカーペンターズ独自の世界です。セカンドにして、カレンの歌唱、リチャードのアレンジは完全に独自のモノになっているのです。タイトル曲である「クロース・トゥ・ユー」でのカレンの歌唱は絶唱としか言いようがありません。もう、あの若い力で押しまくっていたファーストのころとは変わっています。
　ジャケットもファーストから比べると完全にプロのものです。でも、まだ、スーパースター然していません。今となっては、カレンの笑顔が少し悲しくなってしまいますが、私はこのアルバムが一番好きです。

　シングルのヒットで、急遽作られたという印象は、拭い去れない、でも、この作品は、彼らの「オリジナル」として、光を放っている、　サイモン＆ガーファンクル同様に、活動期間は短かったけれど、、きわめてインパクトのあるアーティストについては、さまざまな「ＢＥＳＴ版」や「オムニバス」が作られ、それは、アーティストの「著作権稼ぎ」か「レコード会社の作戦か」は分からないが、そういう中で、このアルバムは、オリジナルとして意味を持つものと思う。
　それはともかく、デビューアルバムや、他のオリジナルアルバムでの完成度の高さはないものの、さすが・・・という点の多々ある名盤である。
