このアルバムはカーペンターズの記念すべきデビュー作。私としてはやはりこの頃はまだカレンも若くて、後年の熟したあの素晴らしい歌声に比べるとどうしても・・・っていう感じにはなります。ただファンとしてはその軌跡も知っておくのもまた一興かな、と思います。だからといってカレンの歌声の素晴らしさ、リチャードの才能あふれるサウンドは変わるわけではないし、カーペンターズはいいなぁって感じる１枚ですよ。それにこのアルバムではリチャードもリードヴォーカルをしている曲も何曲かあり、それを楽しむのもまた喜びです。私のオススメは８．DON'T BE AFRAIDと１０．ALL I CAN DOですね。８はこれぞカーペンターズって感じのいい曲だし、１０はちょっと荒いサウンドがいい感じなんですよね。 若き日の彼らの作品をぜひ一聴あれ。

記念すべきカーペンターズのデビュー盤。
70年代当時、これを聴いていつも感じたのは、リチャードの「気負い」のようなものかな。

オープニングとエンディングをそろえてトータル・アルバム的にした作りといい、「ワンダフル・パレード」の出だしのリチャード自身のアナウンスといい、「ちょっとやりすぎちゃうか」といつも思ってた。
その点、二枚目の「遥かなる影」の方が、アルバムとしての完成度は高いと感じる。

ラスト前の「歌うのをやめた私」はまずベスト盤には収録されないが、盛り上がり感たっぷりの佳曲。
タイトル曲の「涙の乗車券」はオリジナルと全く違ったアレンジで、リチャードの才能を強く感じさせる。

ところで70年代半ばに日本で発売されていたこの「涙の乗車券」には、「遥かなる影」も収録されていた。
マニアの人は知ってるかな？

　カーペンターズの記念すべき１ｓｔ。
カーペンターズと言うと、「イエスタデイ・ワンス・モア」などの独特の曲調をもつヒット曲を思い浮かべますが、ここではまだ、そこまでオリジナリティは発揮されていません。その代わり、リチャードのそしてカレンの若さが強く感じられます。レコード会社側も彼らの実力にどう応じてよいのか分からず、結局彼らの若い力に引っ張られていったのでは、とも思います。
　冒頭の「祈り」から、リチャード、カレンの素晴らしいハーモニーが聴けます。彼らの家はこういう音楽に満ちた家庭だったのでしょう。私はこのアルバムを聴くといつもそういう暖かい家庭が頭に浮かび上がります。
　さらにここでは、カレンのドラムスが楽しめます。以前は他のミュージシャンのものに差し替えられていたのですが、最近のＣＤでは、オリジナルのものであるカレンのものに戻されています。特に上手いと言うわけではありませんが、彼らの歌唱とあいまって暖かい思いにさせられます。
　「涙の乗車券」の名カバーが入っていることでも有名なこのアルバム、お勧めです。
