   99年夏、パリにおけるスタンダーズ・トリオの2枚組ライヴ盤。このトリオは、90年代半ばにキース・ジャレットが体調を崩し、一時活動を休止していたが、その後見事に復活した。その健在ぶりをあざやかにアピールしたのが本作である。
   それ以前のスタンダーズ・トリオと決定的に違っているのは選曲だ。もちろん本作もスタンダード集には違いないが、これまでのようにいわゆる映画やミュージカルが原点ではない。バド・パウエルの<1>に始まって、ベニー・ゴルソンの<2>、ディジー・ガレスピーの<3>、あるいはクリフォード・ブラウンの<7>など、ビバップからハード・バップ時代にジャズメンによって書かれたスタンダードを大々的に取りあげている。
   結果、演奏はこれまで以上にエキサイティングでジャジーになっており、まさに熱演の連続。4ビート・ジャズの楽しさを満喫できる最高のトリオ演奏だ。スタンダーズ・トリオのアルバムに駄作なしといわれるが、なかでもこれはとびきりの作品である。（市川正二）

キースが体調を崩し、楽しみにまっていたコンサートがキャンセルされたときは（98年11月のシカゴ･コンサート）、本当にどうなることかと思いました。コンサートをキャンセルするほどの容態となれば、あまり楽観的な想像はできないですから。でも、そんな心配を跳ね返すどころか、スタンダーズの実力と更なる可能性を見せつけてくれたのがこのウィスパー・ノットです。

一聴、ジャズミュージシャン･オリジナル・スタンダードのプレイ･アルバム。Bouncing With Bud、 Groovin' High、そしてRound Midnight とくれば、それだけでモダン･ジャズファンならうれしくなる選曲です。実際に、今までの作品とは違った切り口で迫る3人のプレイに、「スタンダーズはやっぱり凡百なトリオとは違う」と納得することでしょう。

でも、スタンダーズの本当のすごさが現れるのは Disk2 から。まずは What is this thing called love? がすごい。 ジャック・ディジョネットがジャズ界屈指の名ドラマーというのは知っていたけど、これほどのプレイをこんなにあっさりと見せつけられたら、あっけにとられてしまいます。アルバム Still Live の枯葉とは別の意味で（もちろん、これも最高、ディジョネット大熱演）本当に言葉を失います。テンポを下げて Conception、バラードの Prelude To A Kiss、ミディアム･テンポ Hallucinations、そしてスローな All My Tomorrows ときて、登場するのが、可憐なラテンの Poinciana、このアルバムの山場。聴き流してしまうかのようなプレイの中で展開されるキース･ジャレット、ゲーリー･ピーコック、ジャック・ディジョネットの才能。一年に及ぶ休息は彼ら（とりわけキース）の創造性に翳りを与えるどころか、さらなる表現力を与えてしまったのかと思わせるプレイです。あくまで軽くテーマ、徐々に熱をはらみ、そして一気に花開くアドリブ、そして見事に落とし前をつけ消え入るように収束するエンディング。こんなプレイを当たり前のようにしてしまうなんて、この3人はやっぱり化け物です。

最後に、一曲一曲の内容とは離れますが、僕にはこのアルバムがスタンダーズの再出発アルバムとしても映ります。Still Live で確立された、反復メロディーをもとに構築されるスタンダーズの長尺アドリブを封印してしまったからです。誰が聴いてもスタンダーズとわかる（もちろん彼らしかできないという意味を含め）あの展開を自ら封じ込めてしまうというのは、ある意味、トリオの魅力減少という危険をはらむ選択だったと思います。もちろん、マンネリ化を避けるという意味では必要な選択だったのかもしれませんが、そこにあるのは「自分たちの「あの」展開がなくても、スタンダーズは他のプレイヤーができないクリエーティブな演奏ができるんだ」という意思表示に思えたりするわけです。そして、実際、彼らは「いつも」の展開なしで、いつも以上の演奏を聴かせてくれます。

非常にお勧めなのは言うまでもありません。

1999年7月5日パリ、コングレパレスでのライブ。
約2年間の闘病生活の後、復活したキース。前作『The Melody At Night,With You』は自宅での録音だったが、スタンダーズとしてライブに立てるまで回復した最初のアルバムが本作である。病気から復活した本人も嬉しいだろうが、スタンダーズにもう一度逢えたファンはその1000倍嬉しいに違いない。

演奏できる歓びがこのアルバムには満ちあふれている。出会ったばかりのスタンダーズにもない、85年から87年までの最初のツアーのスタンダーズにもない『生きて、演奏していくこと』の素晴らしさを噛みしめている気がする。

そしてその『生きて、演奏していくこと』のエネルギーを徐々に挑戦していくエネルギーにまで昇華していく。

もう一度スタンダーズに逢える歓びをジャズを愛する人全てに感じて欲しい。

キースの復活ソロコンサート（東京, 1999）、ソロCD Melody at night with youの後の作品、しかも2枚組ということで期待が大きかった分だけ、聴いて少しがっかりしました。キースらしい自由奔放な展開はほとんど聴けず、モダンジャズの総括というような内容です。Ellinton, Gillespie, C. Brown, Jazz Messengers, M. Davisとモダンジャズの歴史ともいうべき面子のナンバーあるいは得意とした曲が次々演奏されます。Whisper notはメッセンジャーズのものよりあっさりと、エレガントに。Chelsea bridgeやAll my tomorrowのようなバラード曲がいつものように深まらないのは何故？Wrap your troubles in dreamsは、マイルスのRelaxin'のような、くつろいだ楽しい雰囲気での演奏です。Round midnight, Prelude to a kissでは ベースが寂寥とした夜、また典雅な味わいをよく表現。What is this thing called love終盤、本CD中唯一といってもよいくらい、このバンドらしく自由にinteractionを取りながらリズムの応酬が3人で聴かれ、圧巻。でもキースの作品という先入観がなげれば、大変いい作品だと思います。彼も病気の後で、疲れもあったのでしょう。実際2001春のトリオコンサート（東京）では、フリー的にものすごいリズムとメロディの迫力でしたから。自作に期待！
