   角川映画第2弾の、ヒューマンサスペンスの超大作である。日本映画初の本格的ニューヨークロケ、ジョージ・ケネディやブロドリック・クロフォードといったハリウッドスターの起用も話題になった。原作は森村誠一。国内のゲスト出演も三船敏郎、鶴田浩二など、実ににぎやかである。
   劇場公開時は「母さん、僕のあの帽子、どうしたでしょうね…」のキャッチコピーがおおいに評判になるとともに、それを英訳して歌うジョー山中の主題歌も大ヒットした。（的田也寸志）

昭和51年、犬神家の一族で映画産業に参入した角川映画第二段。日本映画は完全な斜陽で、「何を今更」という声と「角川なら何かやるかもしれない」という期待とがあった。

本作は、ベストセラーになった小説の映画化。「読んでから見るか、見てから読むか」というコピーは大流行となった。もちろん映画自体も注目を集め「ストウハ」「僕のあの帽子どうしたんでしょうね」なども大流行。釣られて西条八十の詩集を買い求める人が増えたりもした。

思い出してみれば角川映画。その後も「かいかん」や「お父さんを殺しに何かがくるよ」（コピー、やや不正確）など、爆発的ブームになるコピーを生み出している。映画を見ない人もコピーに釣られて映画館に出かけることもあった。そういう意味で「角川映画」のした役割は確かに大きい。

さて、四半世紀ぶりに見る本作。映像の作り方などに古さは感じるが、それは「陳腐」に感じる古さではなく「懐かしさ」に通じると思う。有名俳優の若き姿を見ることができるのも楽しみだ。「ハリウッドプライス」と言わないまでも、もう少し価格が下がってくれれば「必見の一作」扱いなんだろうけれども。日本映画のマーケットの狭さが残念ではある。

原作はサスペンス、推理といった点を主に作られていたのだが、映画版は
脚色に力を入れて登場人物の個々が複雑に絡むドラマになっている。
確か公開当時10歳かそんなだった私が、今もその奇妙な言葉「ストウハ」と
ジョー山中の歌にセンチにさせられるのだ。
日本の公園で混血の青年ジョニーが殺害された事件を下りに、過去に起きた

戦争からそれは一つ一つ紐を解かれ、日本とアメリカの二つの国にまで及ぶ。
主人公の刑事の冷たい眼差しの奥にはくすぶっていた愛憎が再び煮えたぎり
事件を追う強さに繋がる。人間の証明というタイトルはこの映画の内容と強く
結びつかれ、人間であるが故の哀しくて悲しい痛みを、一つの麦わら帽子と
美しい風景が強く心象に残る。

邦画・洋画を問わず、映画化されると原作より質が落ちることがほとんどだが、
この作品だけは原作を上回っているように思える。
特に、八杉恭子、棟居刑事の苦悩と悲しみが画面からにじみ出て、観るものの心に訴えてくる。
角川映画も初期の頃は、よい作品を作ろうと張り切っていたのが見て取れますね。
