　ベスト盤の再発だそうですがボーナストラックである最後の曲 Afro Blue (live)
〈Explodes at the VillageGate,'69,より〉 が最もすばらしかったという意外
な感想です。
　他の曲は大ヒットした曲のカバーで、ポピュラーミュージックあるいはイージー
リスニングという分野に属する（悪く言えば歌の無い歌謡曲ラテンバージョン）
のに対して、この最後の一曲だけのライブ演奏は全く違う熱い演奏になってい
ます。かと言ってお祭り的なジャムセッションのようなものではありません。
　またヒューバートローズ（fl）にある種偏見を持っていた僕は良い意味で裏切
られました。

　Afro Biue 後半1/3を占めるピアノと打楽器隊のフォーバースのようなやり取り
はポリリズムを積み重ねる内に劇的な化学変化を起こして行き、聴いてるこちらも
ぐちゃぐちゃにそれに巻き込まれてしまいます。
　この曲はコルトレーンの一時期の定番の曲で日本公演でも演奏していてその印象
が強いのですが、そもそも演奏者の自由度の高い作りでもあるのでしょう。
　名曲です。
（元メロディはアフリカの民謡とのことですのでクレジットは編曲者を示す場合
が多いようですがモンゴの編曲が広めたと言っても良いと思います。)
　この曲と Cold Sweat は打楽器隊の即興的な呼応による多重なグルーブのようなも
のが摩訶不思議で魅力的で心を掴みますが、その他の曲は拍の頭打ちがきっちり
しすぎていて「アフロ」的なもの、ポリリズム的なノリに欠けるように感じます。

Explodes at the VillageGate　の再発を望みます。

モンゴ・サンタマリアといえばラテン音楽。しかしこのベスト盤はラテン音楽の割合は少なく、ソウルやファンクといったブラックミュージックによる楽曲が中心。

ブラックミュージックを押したベスト盤らしく、Herbie Hancock作曲の名曲「Watermelon Man」が1曲目で、さらにファンキーなナンバーが続く。
お勧めは「Cold Sweat」。リズムセクションのダンサブルなコンビーネーションがGood!

単なるラテンジャズにとどまらない、60年代的ファンキーでダンサブルなサウンドがいいです。カッコいいだけではなく、ユーモラスでヒューマンな味わいもある。なんといっても一番のお薦めは一曲目の「Watermelon Man」でしょう。ハービーハンコック作曲のファンキーナンバーのカバー。いかにも楽しそうなコーラスもgood。
