正月明けの深夜テレビで見るとも為しに見ていたのが奇才ジョン・カーペンター監督の「ニューヨーク1997」だった。
1997年、巨大な監獄と化したマンハッタンにハイジャックされた大統領専用機が不時着する。元特殊部隊出身で終身刑のスネイク・プリスキンは恩赦と引き替えに大統領救出に向かうが、残された時間は24時間しかない。暴徒と化した囚人が次々に襲いかかる中、スネイクは世界貿易センターに突入する・・・！
これは何の映画なんだろう。間違いなく最高に不気味でクールなSF映画であることだけは確かだ。大統領万歳！
そのニューヨーク1997は終始気味悪くいちいち効果的なシンセサウンドが画面を支配する。何とこのサウンドをコンポーズしているのも、カーペンター監督本人なのだ。映画の中で使われたサウンドを、未発表音源とシークエンス毎の台詞を取り入れたのがこのニューヨーク1997完全盤。正に完全盤に相応しい内容。暴徒がわらわらと地下から這い出し、スネイクたちに襲い掛かるM15やキングであるデューク登場のM19など、単純な組み合わせに過ぎないのに圧倒的なイマジネーションを掻き立てるミニマルなフレーズの繰り返しは見事としか言いようがない。
映画の興奮が120％再現されるこの不可思議なサウンドにあなたは幻惑の世界の住人となれることを保障する。
特殊効果で参加しているジェームズ・キャメロンに、後の「ターミネイター」等へ決定的な影響を与えている映像も必見の内容だ。

B級ホラー映画の巨匠として知られる。「遊星からの物体X」「ゼイリブ」などが有名。要塞警察が見たくてたまらない。
