   1999年のコンピレーション『Source Rocks』収録のファンク風トラック「Heatwave」は、フェニックスがこれまでのフランス発のディスコ・ブームとは異なるタイプのユニットであることを教えてくれた。本作の基本路線がリスナーを戸惑わせるのも、陽気でレトロ調なロック・ナンバーであふれ返っているからだ。メンバーのひとりであるキーボード／ギター担当のブランコはダーリン――ダフト・パンクの母体となったインディーズのユニット――の元メンバーだったが、ダーリンとは別の方向に進もうとしたにちがいない。

   本作は、アメリカのFM局でヒットしたウェスト・コースト生まれのポップ・ロックを思い起こさせ、クロスビー・スティル・ナッシュ＆ヤングから「Jump」時代のヴァン・ヘイレンまでありとあらゆるミュージシャンに敬意を払っている。スリリングな「Too Young」とうっとりさせる「On Fire」は騒々しくもすてきなポップソングで、愛情に満ちた替え歌でもある。「Summertime」は熱狂のパワー・ポップのスラッシュで、「Embuscade」はスティーリー・ダン的なジャズ・ロックのインストゥルメンタル。また「Summerdays」は、ビーチへと向かうのんびりとしたカントリー調の旅路と言える。さわやかで知的で上出来なフレンチ・ロック――まずはそう呼びたくなる1枚だ。（Mike Pattenden, Amazon.co.uk）

4曲目のIF I EVER FEEL BETTER を目当てに購入。
日頃はそのような購入のしかたはしないのですが…

全体を聞いて、やはりなるほどな~っと。

このアルバムはほんとうに完成度が高い。
UNITEDっというアルバム名のごとく、何かと何かの有機的な結合が感じれます。
感じ方は人それぞれだけど、最後には皆納得するのではないでしょうか。
フレンチポップ・ロックは不思議な魅力がありますね。

フランスのロックと聞いた時はもっとハードなカンジをイメージしてましたが、なるほどー♪と思うような新しい感覚でした。AIRやSTEREO LAB、ダフトパンクの要素も盛り込まれつつ、ちゃんとロックしています。ソフィア・コッポラの「ロスト・イン・トランスレーション」のサントラにも選曲されるあたりはお目が高い！長く通して聞ける１枚です。

2nd“アルファベティカル”を聴いてこの1stを一考。

手つきが拙いながらも、このアルバムの方が私は好きだなぁと思いました。彼らの「こういう音がすきなんだ！」ていう思いみたいなのがアルバム全体に溢れているし、それが彼らなりに味付けされて、ちぐはぐながらもとても魅力的だから。特に、Ｍ-８の“summerdays”。ミディアムテンポの流れるようなボーカルは、なぜかほろりときちゃいます。だっさいjktでもいいじゃない、私はとってもチャーミングなこのアルバムが大好きです。
