桂枝雀を知らずして、日本のお笑いは語れない!
日本の落語界にあって、独特なみぶり手ぶりによる芸風と、英語落語というまったく新しい分野を切り開いた桂枝雀。
皆が同じ演目を競い合う古典落語の中にあって、独特の枕、ハイトーンの巻き舌による英単語、大げさに体全身を使ったアクションは、斬新でいて、なおかつ基本に忠実です。
現在テレビなどで活躍中の上方のお笑い芸人の全ての基本が、ここに凝縮されています。

蛇含草

『大阪サンケイホール』にて収録

蛇含草は蛇眼草とも書きますが、どうやらこちらの方が正しいようです。
この作品と同工異曲である東京落語の『蕎麦の羽織』(別名『そば清』)は、上方から移植されたものともいいます。

質屋蔵
1984年4月16日
『大阪厚生年金会館中ホール』にて収録

この落語の原話は、安永二年(一七七三)版『近目貫』所収の江戸小咄「天神」で、質屋の蔵の中で質物の精が集まって身のうえ話をするという趣向は、文化七年(一八一〇)大阪板、滝沢馬琴の読本『昔話質屋蔵』に見えます。
落語家の先達が何年にもわたって、現行のような名作に仕立てあげたのでしょう。

「蛇含草（じゃがんそう）」は、友人との意地の張り合いから、餅の大食いに挑戦した男が、満腹の苦しさのあまり、ウワバミが消化薬として用いるといわれる蛇含草を口にするお話。焼きたての餅を食べる仕草はぜひ映像で楽しみたいところなので、少し星の数を落としておきます。友人との会話の初めに出てくる、「掃除の行き届いた住まい」の描写は実に涼しげで気持ちがいい。
「質屋蔵」は、質屋の蔵に幽霊が出るという噂を確かめるために、怖がりの番頭と手伝い（てったい）の熊五郎が蔵の番を任されるお話。質屋に預けられる物品には、預ける人の怨念がこもっているという旦那さんの作り話が面白い。丁稚が熊五郎に誤って話を伝える箇所や熊五郎が旦那さんに弁解をする箇所が大いに笑えます。
