枝雀落語『饅頭こわい』の楽しさは何といっても怖いもののたずね合いの場面ではないでしょうか。
この落語の原話は中国の笑話集『笑府』に「饅頭」として出ています。

ちしゃ医者

『ピッコロシアター』にて収録

ちしゃというのは、萵苣と書きまして、ちさともいいますが、日本レタスのことです。この『ちしゃ医者』は桂枝雀が敬愛した、初代の桂春團治の十八番ネタとして知られています。

「饅頭こわい」は、東西問わず有名な落語の一つ。長屋の若い連中が好きなもの嫌いなものを話し合っているが、一人だけすました顔でそれを見ている者がいる。周りの連中は彼の嫌いなものを聞き出すが、その若者は「まんじゅう」が嫌い、嫌いどころか怖いとさえいう。そこで彼のすました態度が気に入らない周りの連中は、まんじゅうで彼を一つ驚かしてやろうとたくらむが…。枝雀の「饅頭こわい」の聞かせどころは前半の好き嫌いの尋ね合いにあります。ここはお腹を抱えて笑えるくらいおもしろい。枝雀の本領発揮といったところです。
「ちしゃ医者」は、世間からヤブ医者と呼ばれる先生が遭遇する少しおかしな災難の話。このタイトルは後半にある老婆が「医者」を日本レタスの「ちしゃ」と聞き違えるところから来ています。こやしに使う糞尿が話の途中から出てくるので、そういうネタでは笑えないという人には向いていません。先生の従者である久助が枝雀のハマリ役で、先生をヤブ医者とは思いながらも尊敬している様子を上手に表現しています。

このＣＤを最初に聞いたとき、「枝雀師って本当に完璧主義者だったんだなぁ」と思ってしまいました。

「饅頭こわい」の冒頭、枝雀師はちょこっとだけ弟子の雀々さんの話をされます。稽古では面白いのに舞台では思ったほどウケない、これこそ噺家にとって一番つらいことだったのでしょう。「ちしゃ医者」のマクラでは、出囃子の話題に触れておられます。出囃子がまるまる１曲、「ひとわたり」終わるのに合せて楽屋から出てきたい、ご本人は「たまたま」とおっしゃってはいますが、こういうところに「美学」「こだわり」を感じてしまうのは私だけでしょうか…。

いずれもいったん「本題」に入ってしまえばきわめて快調、いつもの「枝雀節」に酔い痴れるばかりです。「饅頭こわい」で夢の話をして若い連中をなぶるおやっさん、「ちしゃ医者」で自分の主である先生を「藪」と認めてなお尊敬している久助、どちらもゲラゲラと声を上げて笑ってしまします。が、本題に入る前に、「完璧主義者」だけが垣間見せる「厳しさ」と「寂しさ」を感じさせられたように思いました。
