『夏の夜の夢』の録音を1957年にアムステルダム・コンセルトヘボウ管弦楽団を指揮してフィリップスに遺しているセルですが、それから10年を経て1967年に録音された、「自分の楽器」であるクリーヴランド管弦楽団を指揮してのこの『夏の夜の夢』は、コンセルトヘボウとの演奏とは比較にならないくらいに優れています。しばしば音質が悪いなどと評され、バーンスタインの陰に隠されて……と言われがちなセルのCBSへの録音ですが、少なくともこの盤に関しては、演奏は云わずもがな音質の点でも文句の付け所が無いように思われます。試しにこの曲の「序曲」をお聞き下さい。管楽器による導入に続くヴァイオリンの微音による合奏を耳にするだけで、この演奏が並々ならぬものであることがお分かり頂けるものと思います。
精緻であるばかりでなく、溌剌としまた愉楽に満ちたこの弦楽合奏を耳にしたら、どうしてその後に続く演奏もまたきっと素晴らしいものであるに違いない、と期待せずにいられるでしょう？

蛇足ですが、『フィンガルの洞窟』も文句無しの名演です。
……このCDは聞かずに済ませられるようなトラックは一つとして無い、とても素晴らしいCDです。

いわずと知れた「イタリア」のベスト盤。セル時代のクリーブランド管の一糸乱れぬ恐るべきアンサンブル能力が堪能できます。セルは、ベートーヴェンを演奏するときには楽器間のバランスがいまいちの時が多いですが、メンデルスゾーンのようなオーケストレーションの薄い曲の時には、バランス、音色共に計算されつくされていて最高です。昔のアメリカのオケ特有のメロウで落ち着いた音色もいいです。

セルは、数年前まではすごく苦手な指揮者だった。曲を始めて聴くには、難しすぎた。しかし、この1年セルを聞けるようになってきた。イタリアは、トスカニーニの名盤がある。あの引き締まった、前へ前へ駆け抜けるあのトスカニー二の演奏はベストのひとつと思う。このセルの演奏も1楽章から何とすがすがしく緻密な演奏だろう！こういうアンサンブルで、こういう響きを出せる指揮者がいた時代があるんだなと感激した。カラヤンのベルリンフィルではでない。（聞き比べると非常に面白い）オケをきたえ、精鋭部隊にしたセルの手腕はすごい。ただし、セルの演奏はセル独特の癖（言い回し）があるので、1度聞いてあわないだめと判断せず、数回繰り返し聞くと理解できてくる。自分の仕事に没頭している人には、セルの演奏がスムーズに入ってくると思う。セルの音楽作りは甘くない。そんな感じがする！
結婚行進曲、名盤といわれているクレンペラーのものと比べると面白い。すごくセルの演奏が心を躍らせる。これ1曲でもこのＣＤは買う価値アリ。
