ぼくの大好きなアルバムがＣＤ化された。このアルバム「パイレーツ」だ。バックをかためるミュージシャンもすごいが、そのすごい連中を率いてのびのびと自己を表現するリッキーに脱帽だ。リラックスして楽しんでいる。ひしひしと伝わる表現することの楽しさ。音楽することの楽しさが伝わってくる。こんなアルバムにはなかなか出会えない。もし、音楽の楽しさが分からない人はこのアルバムを聴いてみるといい。音楽は表現なんだと、楽しむことなんだと理解できるだろう。オリジナルの発表は１９８１年なんだけど、２００１年の現在でも、ちっとも古くない。それは流行に左右されない音楽の表現だからだ。

リッキー・リー・ジョーンズと言えば日本ではデビュー曲の「恋するチャック」が有名で(その題名と曲調で)軽いノリのミュージシャンと思われがちだ。本アルバムでも明るい調子のアップ・テンポな曲があったりするので、そのイメージに惑わされがちだが、リッキーの本質は「繊細」と「叙情性」である。

タイトル作「Pirates」も明るいタッチで始まるが、後半は故郷を離れる幼な馴染みと故郷そのものに対する情感が溢れていて聴いている者の心を揺さぶる。一方、別の曲ではバック・ミュージシャンとの会話が入っていたりして、録音当時のリラックス・ムードも伝わる。

全ての曲が良く練られているのだが、のびやかにしなやかに唄う部分と、囁くように歌うあの独特の唱法の部分との融合が絶妙なバランスを保っており、アルバムを起伏に富んだものにしている。冒頭の「We Belong Together」はバランスが取れたアルバムの性格を代表する曲であり、「Woody And Dutch On The Slow Train To Peking 」はジャージーで明るい曲の代表である。聴く者に音楽の楽しさ・素晴らしさを充分に堪能させてくれる傑作アルバムで、リッキー・ファンならずとも必聴の一作。
