   60年代の後半に興ったウエスト・コースト・ロックの代表的な存在にして、70年代以降のロック・バンドに多大な影響を与えたバッファロー・スプリング・フィールドは、スティヴン・スティルス、リッチー・フューレル、ニール・ヤングという、アメリカのロック・ヒストリーに名を残す偉大なソングライター3人を擁した伝説のバンド。本作は、彼らの才能と豊かな音楽性がもっとも良い形で表現された作品だ。
   カントリー、フォーク、ブルースといったアメリカン・ロックのルーツを正統的に受け継ぐ音楽性を基本にしながらも、ジャズ、ソウル、R&B、南米民族音楽、クラシックなどのファクターを巧みに取り入れたサウンドは、まさにタイムレスな刺激を聴く者に与えてくれる。20世紀前半の現代音楽にも通じる実験的なアレンジ・ワークをオーソドックスなバンド・アンサンブルに融合させるなど、前衛的な試みも随所に見られる本作は、発表当時はまったく理解されず、セールス的にも低迷したという。まさに、「早すぎた傑作」と言えるだろう。特に<1>（N・ヤング）、<9>（S・スティルス）は、永遠の名曲だ。（森 朋之）

67年発表の代表作。まるで展覧会のようにN・ヤング,S・スティルス,R・フューレイの名曲がずらりと並ぶ。過去の音楽的語法を大胆にコラージュする実験的な試みによって『ペット・サウンズ』や『サージェント・ペパーズ』に匹敵する過剰な傑作になった。

その後のアメリカミュージックシーンを語る上で、このバンドを抜きにしては語れないだろう。
ニール・ヤング、スティ-ブン・スティルス、ジム・メッシーナ等々
CSN&Yの原形であり、イ-グルスの原形であり、すべてのアメリカンロックの原点だからだ。
サイケで、クラシカルで、カントリーで、多面的な要素を多く持ち合わせるこのアルバムを聴かずして、ロックを語るなかれ。
非常に短い活動期間だったが、どの曲も素晴らしい。
完成度も高く、ジャケットも美しく、文句の付け所がない。

いわゆるヒット曲と呼ばれるものは収録されていませんが、それでも、このアルバムからは、短すぎる活動期間の中で、彼らの音楽が如何に幅の広いものだったかという事を改めて感じることができます。実験的な曲やメンバーの個性が強く、一見すると統一性の無いように感じる構成が、ビートルズのあるアルバムに似ていて、一時期のローリング・ストーンズばりにビートルズへの対抗意識が感じらて、とても面白かったです。

何と言い表せばいいのだろう、このアルバムの与える印象は。今から４０年前の作品だが、それよりも遥か昔の、何の汚れも知らない、穏やかで平和な時代の息吹を感じさせる。このバンドは、時代の空気を変えてやろうという思いはあったのだろうか。或いはあったかもしれない。しかし、それは流行の最前線を行こうというものでは決してない。どんな時代にも通じる、音楽を愛する心を刺激、いや刺激という言葉も似合わない、思い出させてくれるといったほうがいいかもしれない、そういう作品なのだ。

とにかく不思議な感触のアルバムである。こういう音を意識的に作り上げたのだろうか。でも、音楽には、偶然によって作者の意図しない雰囲気が宿ることもある。このアルバムの場合、そのようなものだったのではないか。

まだ未聴の方には、是非この神秘的な音楽に身を委ねてみてほしいと切に願う。
