全てが「華原朋美」の伝説のエピソードのひとつであるとすれば☆5です。
十分にテイクを重ねず、１発取りでもしたかの未完成な不安定なボーカルで何故発表されてしまったのだろう、何故この歌詞を与えられねばならなかったのだろうと、音楽を鑑賞するだけの傍観者でいられない気持ちにさせられてしまう。

WARNER MUSIC移籍後第一弾、小室哲哉トータルプロデュースとしては最後となるオリジナルアルバム｡

小室との恋愛を露骨に音楽活動に映し出す華原朋美｡「LOVE BRACE」、 「storytelling」がそれぞれ春、夏だとすれば、この「nine cubes」は安定と陰りをみせる秋の季節｡明るく幸せに満ちたデビューアルバム、それに色を加え幅を広げた2ndアルバムと比べると衰退していることは明らか｡それは歌唱面に強く表れています｡痛々しいほどに不安定な歌声｡ただ、音痴と言ってしまえばそれまでですが、病みながらも懸命に歌うひたむきさに好感が持てます｡

他の面でも確かに以前よりも劣った感じはありますが、それは作品へのアプローチが異なるだけで、むしろ今までになかった良さがあります｡全体的に落ち着いていて穏かな音、昔を懐かしみ今の幸せがいつまでも続くことを願う詞｡折り返し地点に立ち、築いてきた愛を確かめながら帰途をたどってゆくカップルのようです｡「あなたについて」や「waiting for your smile」は、そんな温かさと物寂しさが入り混じったラヴソング｡

ただ、幸せの終焉を暗示させて止まないのは、「storytelling」｡この曲の詞はセールスとともにふたりの関係も全盛だった頃に作られたものなのですが、これを今歌うと、『ずっと　ずっと　今のまま　変わらないで｡』という最後の一節が、逆に“恋愛はいつかは終わりがくるものだ”ということを暗に語っているかのようです｡

このあと華原は冬の時期を迎えることになるのですが、その後苦境を乗り越えた彼女は以前よりも強く頼もしく思えます｡このアルバムを聴くのであれば、他の彼女の作品も合わせて聴いてみてください｡恋愛のプロセス、人生の縮図をみているような気分になります｡

先行シングル「daily news」からしてイヤな予感はしてましたが予想は的中。楽曲はわざと売れ線を外したような地味な曲ばかり。しかも嫌がらせかと思うほど失恋ソングが並んでます。このアルバムが出たころはすでに２人は別れていて小室も案の定、真面目にプロデュースする気などなかったようです。やたら歌が下手なのも意図的？こんなものを世に出してしまうほど当時の小室哲哉には余裕があったのですね。そんな小室氏とは裏腹に彼女はまだ小室にぞっこんでした。それを考えてこれを聴くととても複雑な気持ちになります。もう愛情がないならもて遊ぶような真似はやめて完全に彼女から手を引くべきでした。
