「メフィストワルツ第１番」の録音は相当数存在するが、このカツァリスの演奏は必聴である。得意の内声浮かしは当たり前、同音連打しまくり、テンポもころころ変えまくりと本当に好き勝手に弾いている。しかし、それを支える超人的な指周りの良さとオクターブの速さには感心させられる。
特に凄まじいのが、後半の跳躍部分の難所である。この部分のカツァリスはめちゃめちゃ速い！他のピアニストを２倍速にしたような速さで一気に駆け抜け、しかも機械のように正確だから恐れ入る。まさに悪魔的な超絶技巧。

とここまででも十二分にお勧めだが、ペダルを抑えた「孤独の中の神の祝福」も素晴らしい。また、今から25年も前に「メフィストワルツ」の２~４番、「メフィストポルカ」、「調のないバガテル」などの晩年の作品を取り上げるカツァリスの選曲眼もさすがである。

このCDには、フランツ・リストの曲の中でも、「メフィスト」シリーズ

にこだわった選曲となっています。メフィストワルツ第1番は多くの演奏家によるプレイが残されていますが、メフィストワルツ第2番以降の作品はあまり紹介される機会は少ない。そんな中このCDでは、それらの曲を聴くことができるのです。作品自体は晩年のリストらしく、かなり前衛的な曲が多いのですが、シンプルな中にかつての「超絶技巧」的な演奏法がちりばめられ、不思議と耳に残る、まさに「メフィスト」の演奏といった感じです。かなりマニアックな作品集といえましょう。

　詩的で宗教的な調べ「孤独の中の神の祝福」が聴きたくて購入した。中声出しや独特なアレンジが得意なカツァリスにとっては、こういった荘厳な曲が向いているかもしれない。大のお気に入りの曲である。ブレンデルの演奏よりは、気に入っている。孤独の中に差し込むかすかな希望や儚さを感じ取ることが出来る。言葉ではうまく説明できないので聴いてみて。
　問題はメフィストワルツ第１番である。後半のあの正確無比の速さは凄すぎる。あのパッセージをあそこまで速く弾く演奏は聴いたことが無い。とんでもない超絶技巧である。一度は聴いてみるべきである。また、２番以降の録音もあまり存在しないので、買って損は無いと思う。
　っていうか、こんな素晴らしいＣＤが1050円というのはあり得ない！自分のもつ数あるＣＤの中でも、お得なＣＤTOP３に入る作品である。
