表題曲「シティ・ライフ」は、ぜひウォークマン持参で都心の高層ビル街に赴いて聞いてみてください。そういった風景と美しく調和する、数少ない音楽です。

僕は仕事で徹夜明けの早朝、始発で帰る際にこの曲をイヤホンで聴き、足が震えるほどの感動を覚えました。これほど都市の美しさ、クールさ、そして残酷さをビビッドに活写した曲を他に知りません。

木管の和声による冒頭部分は、まさに都市の夜明けを感じさせます。そして打楽器のメインテーマが始まる瞬間の格好良さといったらありません。
従来のライヒの音楽に比して、耽溺するような重厚さは後退し、よりポップでクールな作品です。

　「頭がピリピリとがっていく感じ」こういってすんなり納得してくれる人はいないでしょうが、音楽を聴けばきっとあなたもわかってくれるはず。異常に洗練されている、このような音楽を聴いて「攻撃されている」と感じる人もいるでしょう。ほとんど宗教的といっていいような恍惚感を与えてくれる、数少ない音楽の一つです（といってもその大部分をライヒが占めるのですが）。
　9.11を連想せずにはいられない表題曲を聞くことが、そのまま一つの体験と成り得るような、散々に垂れ流されたあの映像を見るより遥かにリアルにテロを感じることになるような、恐ろしくも美しい極度に研ぎ澄まされた傑作。
