   1996年に出たこのベスト盤の選曲からは、ジャズ、ロック、あるいはワールド・ミュージックやクラブ・ミュージックを聴いている層の取り込もうという狙いが読みとれる。ジャズ・ギタリストのパット・メセニーが多重録音で演奏している<2>は、そのための切り札ともいうべき強力なナンバーだ。ミニマル・ミュージックの大将であるライヒは、シンプルなメロディーを巧みに改変しながら反復していく。リスナーの忍耐力を試すかのようなしつこさはない。転調もしばしば行われる。メセニーは歯切れのいいピッキングを駆使し、耽美的な音色で曲を盛り上げている。

1996年にリリースされたスティーブ・ライヒのベスト盤から、さらに篩いをかけて選んだ入門盤ということだが、全然ダメである。

ライヒの曲を理解することがこんな断片に切り裂かれた構成でなおかつ一部の断片の集まりでは全く役目を果たしていない。あまりに役目を果たしていなくて怒りさえ湧いてくる。シングル・カットなんてできるわけないのだからこんなアルバムは存在価値不明だ。

「ミニマリズムってどんなん？」以前から知りたかったので、お手ごろ価格のこの商品を購入しました。最初は一定のフレーズの繰り返しに思えましたが、静かに波立つ抑揚がカッコイイ！正月に従弟に聴かせたら、かなり突っ込まれましたけど。
