ビートルズの"サージェント・ペパーズ〜"が発売されたのが1967年、その翌年の68年にこの奇妙なアルバムは発表されている。それまでアレンジャーやプロデューサーとし活躍していたヴァン・ダイク・パークス初のアルバムである。

さまざまなミクスチャー音楽を当たり前なものとして、聴いている現代の若者に試聴させることを考えてみよう。"サージェント・ペパーズ〜"と"ソング・サイクル"のどちらに衝撃を受けるだろうか。おそらく、ほとんどの若者が"ソング・サイクル"を選ぶことになると思われる。"サージェント・ペパーズ〜"が、その後のコンセプトアルバムの雛形として、多くのアーティストが活用したのに対して、"ソング・サイクル"はいつまでたっても異形のものでありつづけているからだ。そもそもジャンルとしてこれは何になるのか。一聴すると、ディズニー映画のサントラみたいに柔らかくドリーミーだが、キチガイの白昼夢みたいに薄ら怖ろしくもある。間違いなくチル・アウト・ミュージックではあるものの、そこにはクラブ的な視点で見たときのカッコよさは皆無である。全12曲、そもそもどこからどこまでが、1曲なのかも判別がつかない。かといって、大作感もまるでなく、とにかくへらへら
と、どこにも着地することなく漂っていく。
ヴァン・ダイク自身によると、これは「アウト・オブ・チューンネス（調子外れ性）の活用」というらしく、まさしく言い得て妙であり、本人が意識的にこの漂流感を生み出しているということに驚かされる。

これは作られたものがろうか？全体を覆っている雰囲気、トータルアルバムと言ってしまえばそれまでだが、パークスの関心は音楽という狭い定義からはみ出して、この音のテーマパークを作り出したのだろう。無駄な音は一つもない、効果音が一つ転がり落ちたかと思うと、もうそれが音楽として回転し始めている。すべてもミクロな音の原子が（そこには塵やゴミもあるのだが）、この「世界」のためにあるのだ。しかし、不思議なことに音がテーマに従属することはなく、音楽が音に従属することもない。ブライアン・ウィルソンのあの「ペットサウンズ」と並ぶ、20世紀の天才が残した「奇跡」のアルバムである。

豊かな音楽性、その言葉そのものをレコードにしたような、そんな作品である。時々時間を作って１枚を通しで聴いてみる。この作品だけは、そうしないといけないような気がして・・・うーん何回聴いてもかわいい。星5つなんかじゃ足りないよぉ。
