SEX PISTOLS以来の衝撃！というキャッチフレーズと共に英国でデビューしたジザメリの1st。ギターのフィードバックノイズがアルバム全体を支配している。好きな人は死ぬほどハマるだろうが、嫌いな人は１曲目でストップボタンを押してしまうでしょう。でも曲自体はポップです。プライマルスクリームの中心人物ボビー・ギレスピーがドラムを叩いてます。

演奏はハードでは無いのですが、
ノイズをまとった音響が、あまりにも壮絶で、
最初聴いたときは、ただ圧倒されるばかりでした。

しかし、
メロディ自体が甘美なほどにポップだからでしょうか、
ささやくような歌声が頭の中にこびりついていて、
ある日、無性に聴きたくなり、再び聴いてみると、
何か我慢していた事が満たされたような、
危険な香りのする陶酔を感じました。
こうなると、もはやノイズさえも心地よくなってしまいます。

この甘酸っぱい飴は、
内面の少し深いところでゆっくりと融解するようです。

鳴り物入りでデビューした85年の1stアルバム。

激しいノイズのかかったディストーション･ギターが、やたらかっこよく感じられる時と、逆にただ演奏全体の貧弱さを轟音が覆っているようにしか思えない時があって、聴く自分の状況で随分と印象が違ってしまう一枚ではある。また1曲単位で聴くと、気持ちいいが、全体を通して聴くと途中でだれる事が多いのも事実である。

ただこのアルバムをリアルタイムで体感し、ライヴなどに参加できていたとしたら、おそらく相当に刺激的で画期的なイメージを抱いたことだろう。本来、グラスゴー出身というのが納得のメロディ重視のソングライティングを基調としながらも、それをドラッギーでグラマラスな危険な音楽に仕立ててしまった彼らは、やはりロック史の中で一つの流れを築いたといっても過言ではないだろう。まさにタイトルどおりの毒入りキャンディポップという新たなるジャンルだった。

なお、この1stのみドラマーに、プライマルのボビー･ギレスピーが参加している。多少遅れ気味かつ比較的単調なズンドコドラムは、このアルバムのサイケ感を増幅する妙味となっているので、見逃せない部分だろう。バンドの力量に対して、背伸びをしていないところが、このアルバムの最大の成功点なのかもしれない。
