ちょうどこの映画が封切りされた時、私は高校三年生。入試も終わり
ほっとして見た映画の中で最後に出演者全員でI shall be releasedを
歌うのを見て自分もロックもひとつの時代が終わったんだよなあと
感じたのを今も覚えています。
そんな歴史的コンサートをThe bandを中心に演ったのに
悪かろうはずがない。参加者全員意気込みが通常とは違い、最高の歌を最高

の演奏で聞かせてくれます。参加メンバーも豪華だし、これは必聴です。
でも、後から裏話を聞いてみるといろいろ複雑なものがあったコンサート
らしいですけどね。

ザ・バンドの解散コンサートの模様を収めたライブ盤。このために作ったワルツ風のテーマソングの物悲しい響きが郷愁を誘う。B.ディランのバックバンドとしてスタートしたザ・バンド。独立後は数々のヒットを飛ばし、アメリカを代表する文字通りの"バンド"になった。ゲスト出演者もディランを初め豪華で、ザ・バンドの交遊の広さを物語る。

「Helpless」を歌うN.ヤング。あれ、「Further on up the Road」(E.クラプトン)が入っていないのは何故 ? 「Forever Young」のB.ディラン。そしてビデオで見た際にひときわ印象に残ったのは、禅の境地に入ったかのように無心にドラムを叩くR.スター。勿論、ザ・バンド自身の曲も代表作揃いで素晴らしい。最後は、こうしたコンサートでは定番のディランの「I Shall be Released」を全員で歌って締める。

ザ・バンドの言によると、解散コンサートは単なるラスト・コンサートではなく、是非とも「ラスト・ワルツ」にしたかったそうである。私にはその微妙な差異は分からないが、本作が詩情に溢れた感動的なアルバムである事は確かである。一つの時代の終焉を告げるリリシズムに満ちた傑作アルバム。
