『病んだ魂―ニルヴァーナ・ヒストリー』には、カートコバーン自ら、ジェーンズアディクションのような音楽を目指したかったとある
。ジェーンズアディクションのアルバムで、もっとも一般的評価の高いこのアルバムは、ファンク色が強く、当時、Red Hot Chili Peppersのライバルバンドとして見られていた。８０年代ハードロック的な音に加え、他では余り観られない独自の「ノリ」が感じられる。個人的には、Mother love boneや、Living Colorが近いと感じるが。後にロラパルーザツアーを企画し、ジャーナリズム的には多くの話題を振りまいた。９０年代のバンドとして、非常に重要なバンド。

９０年代オルタナティヴを語る上で欠かす事のできないカリスマ、ペリーファレルが音楽、芸術その他全ての枠組みを取り払って作り上げた傑作アルバム。壮大な広がりを感じさせる2からアップテンポな5、FISHBONEをゲストに迎えた8など、どれをとっても一級品。デイヴナヴァロのギターも色気を感じさせ、バンドの雰囲気は唯一無比なものになっている。

どことなくジャージーで、浮遊感漂う記念すべきメジャーデヴューアルバム。
初のスタジオアルバムとなった今作では、
ジェーンズ特有の妖しくアッパーな浮遊感を伴ないながら、より偏屈的アートの世界を追求している。
おそらくはペリーフェレル本人にしか意図したものはわからないだろう、気持ち悪いぐらい不自然な曲順。

前作があまりに整ったスキのない作品だったのに対し、こちらはどことなく未完成、デモ的とも取れるような内容でおもしろい。
完璧すぎる音よりも、少し欠点があるぐらいがとっつき易いと思うのは僕だけでしょうか？

VUを彷彿とさせる名曲『Jane's Say』は必聴
