1「Take on me」との出会いは中学時代。英語劇で使用するBGMを探している時でした。軽いタッチのリズムにメロディックなキーボード、そして伸びのよいモートン・ハルケットのVo.が何とも印象的な全米No.1ソングです。CT、LP、CDを追って購入、それ故このアルバムには愛着があります。ルックスはジャケの通り申し分ナシですね。

ドラムマシーンの単調さが指摘されたりもしましたが、それを補って余りある楽曲の良さ。列車の汽笛をイメージさせるキーボードでミステリアスな雰囲気の2「Train of thought」、モートンの声の素晴らしさが堪能できるバラード3「Hunting high and low」、唯一派手に仕上げられ、ダンスリミックスも聴き物の6「The sun always shines on TV」、優しく話し掛けるようなVo.が温かい7「And you tell me」など、新人でこのクオリティの高さ。やはりモートンの声質に負う所が大きいですが、ポール＆マグスによる卓越したソングライティングがあってこその話。80年代を代表する一枚です。

彼等はノルウェー出身です。それはこのアルバムを聴けば分かります。
全曲を通して北欧モノらしい透明感と切ないメロディーに溢れています。
大ヒットした（１）は別として、（３）（５）（７）などは聴けばノルウェーの寒さや短い夏が身近に肌で感じらそうな雰囲気です。ちょっと大袈裟？
（１０）なんかも北欧モノによくありがちな雰囲気が出ています。

そして何故か北欧モノは日本人にも受け入れられやすいのです。一度聴いてみれば理解できますよ。

a-haの記念すべきデビューアルバム。これを聴かずしてa-haは語れません!!

Mortenの澄みきったファルセットボイス、癒されていく感じを強く感じる事の出来るメロディーはa-haのブレインPal＆Magsの仕事!!この3人が巧みに合わさり，出来あがったこの素晴らしいデビューアルバムは聞く価値充分です!!
