   ラリー・カールトンはクルセイダーズで脚光を浴び、その後ソロ・アーティストとして人気者になったけど、そのきっかけとなったのは、なんといっても78年に録音した本作。彼のニックネーム“ミスター335”は本作で使用している愛用のギター、ギブソンES-335に由来する。みずからのスタジオも“ルーム335”と名付けたほどで、この当時のカールトンは335にぞっこんだった。鮮やかなフィンガリングと絶妙なチョーキング、そしてディストーションのかかった独特の音が最高にカッコよくて、当時多くの若者がこのアルバムに熱狂したものだ。技術的な面もさることながら、ジャズ、ソウル、ロックなどあらゆるポップ音楽をミックスした独自の音楽性はバラエティ豊かで、まさにフュージョン・ギターの旗手にふさわしい。共演はグレッグ・マシソン、エイブラハム・ラボリエル、ジェフ・ポーカロなど。オープニングの<1>はデイヴ・グルーシン作曲の「キャプテン・カリブ」と並ぶフュージョン黄金時代の人気曲だ。カールトンといえば、なにはともかく本作から。（市川正二）

クルセイダーズ脱退直後の78年に発表したメジャーでの初リーダー盤。フュージョン史に残る名盤という声もある代表作で,快調にドライヴするプレイを期待するファンには最高の1枚。後年の多用性はないが,当時のギター小僧を唸らせた技巧はやはり鮮やか。

このアルバムの発売当時（1978年）、二浪中の私でしたが、聴きまくりました。あれから25年、いまだに一曲目「Ｒｏｏｍ　335」は彼のベストプレイだと思います。また、このアルバムでジェフ　ポーカロとエイブ　ラボリエルにノックアウトされ、特にジェフは大のお気に入りドラマーとなりました。故人となってしまったのが残念です。インストだけでなくラリーの味のあるポップなヴォーカルも楽しめ、当時ギターキッズを虜にしたものです。最近また聴いてますが、何度聴いても素晴らしいと思います。カールトンのギターはオンリーワンの味です。ああ、こうやって書いていたらまた聴きたくなってしまいました。

このLPと出合ったのは19歳の学生時代です。初めてルーム335を聞いたとき，「こりゃ全編サビだな・・・」と思いぶっ飛びました。そして今週末，「ラリーカールトン＆ボブジェームス」のコンサートに行ってきます。ルーム335は聞けるでしょうか・・・・（たぶん無理だろな~）でも楽しみです。
