１９８９年に制作された映画「バットマン」のサウンド・トラック盤。マイケル・キートン、ジャック・ニコルソン、キム・ベイジンガーなどが出演した超娯楽大作。シリーズ化されてますが、その第一作の音楽を受け持ったのが”天才”プリンス。彼の醸し出すサウンドが、夜の世界に暮す”バットマン”によく合います。さすが、プリンスです。

勿論、映画を見てからでもいいですし、先にプリンスの音楽だけでも十分楽しめます。サントラと言っても、プリンスはただ音楽を並べただけでなく新作オリジナルと変わらないような出来具合です。さすがです。

1989年リリース。『The Arms Of Orion』がシーナ・イーストンと共作(面白い組み合わせだなぁ)、『Scandalous』がジョン・L・ネルソンと共作。残りがProduced,Arranged,Composed and Performed by Princeである。（●＾o＾●）

間違いなくプリンスはロックはおろかジャズ・クラシックいや文学・絵画・映画etc、所謂'芸術'と称される分野において比類なき天才のひとりである。天才とは自らのヴィジョンを常に決定的に持ち、その正当性になんら疑問を持たない人間のことである。故に商取引としてのCDの市場調査おける販売のトレンドなどというものは一切眼中に無く（●＾o＾●）、自らのヴィジョンに照らして『正』とあらば前進しつづける。よって時に『市場』は天才を受け付けず事実破産させたりする。そしてプリンスも『パープル・レイン』の後破綻した。

しかし経済的に破綻したのは人間としてのプリンスであって、芸術的天才のプリンスではなかった。プリンスはこの『バットマン』のヒットで復活のキッカケを掴み、その後の『グラフィティ・ブリッジ』で商業的にも完全復活する。映画ではこのアルバムの一部しか使われていないのが不思議である。それほどこのアルバムのレベルは高い。

破綻した人を復活させるチカラが『バットマン』にはあるみたいだなぁ（●＾o＾●）。

このアルバムは、「サウンドトラック」というより「コラボーレート作品」と呼ぶ方がぴったりきます。
映画全体の音楽担当は『スパイダーマン』も手がけたD.エルフマンで、プリンスの曲は「Partyman」「Trust」「Scandalous」が使われるだけ。意外にも、あの「Batdance」は本編に登場しません。

アルバムでは、映画よりもセクシーでワイルドな『Batman』の世界が展開します。まさに「夜の帝王」の名にふさわしい音楽です。すべての曲は科白から着想を得ており、本編の音が随所に盛り込まれています。

実写化された憧れのヒーローを見て、プリンスはさぞ血湧き肉躍ったことでしょう。その興奮がビートに表れています。ファン魂に燃える殿下が目に浮かぶ、はじけた演奏です。アルバムで盛り上がった後に映画を見たら拍子抜けするほど、見事な仕上がりです。一聴の価値はありますよ。
また、カーステレオで聞くとバットモビールを運転している気分になり、痛快この上なしです。

余談ですが、スパイダーマンが超能力で敵と闘うのに対し、バットマンは人間としての知力・体力・科学力（&経済力）で勝負します。それに変人。いかにも殿下が好みそうなヒーローですね。
