このCDは想像以上に素晴らしい出来だと感じた。簡単に言えばB面コレクションだ。普通B面と言えば、A面を考慮して盛りあがりを敢えて抑える傾向が常だが、このCDを聞いてその先入観は見事なまで覆された。つまり全体的にA面と全くひけを取らないので、こちらがA面ベスト？と見まがいかねないのだ。１曲目の「条件反射」からアップテンポだ。しかも、多くの曲でA面と対を成す統一感まで見せているのは脱帽である。例えば「少女A」のB面も曲調といい歌詞といい危なげだし。「難破船」のB面「恋路」は『難破船第二章』と言った具合に名曲必至だ。

同時にA面シングル集同様に年代順に配列されてるので、明菜の歌唱力の変遷も理解できる。一番強烈な衝撃を受けるのはCDジャーナルの通り、ラポエーム→清教徒の流れだ、来る曲来る曲A面かと思わせる程の完成度で且つかっこ良い。この時期は、丁度絶頂期でデザイア等の民俗性溢れる曲が多かったが、B面もその流れを汲んでいるのは流石という他ない。丁度この頃のB面は鈴木キサブロー、林哲司、久保田利伸と一級を揃えた無妥協さも納得。それ以後は情念過多との事だが、個人的には「恋路」「薔薇」辺りは寧ろ情念の深い歌唱が良い味だしている印象。「小悪魔」以降は、A面と同じく方向性がやや定まっていない感じが共通してしまっている感がある。

「雨のレクイエム」は玉置らしく哀愁バラードに仕上がっている。また「ドライブ」は堀江淳提供曲であり、邦楽の歴史がそのまま楽曲に反映されているのが興味深い。

とにかく、B面と侮る無かれその完成度は相当なものだ。明菜が波に乗っている当時シングルの選曲に相当な審議が重ねられたと聞くが、それも十分納得できる。脇役の曲でさえもスポットライトを浴びるには充分過ぎるのだ。とにかく素晴らしいとしか言えない。

オリジナルアルバムではほぼオミットされたB面群。「なぜこれがB面?」てな「清教徒」や「椿姫ジュリアーナ」、そして「これからNATURALLY」あたりもほかのアイドルならA面にしたかもしれない佳作だし、この曲たちがCDで聴きたくて、CDシングルを買いあさったあの日が懐かしい。現在、廃盤なのが寂しい。
