爽やかな、しかししっかりとしたサウンド。歌声はビーチボーイズを思わせるかのようなあっさりとしたハモリ具合。ベースソロも非常にかっこよく、傑作中の傑作です。

こと純粋な「ポップ」として、ここまで素晴らしい域に達したアルバムは今のところ他に聴いた事がない。
どこか切なさもある超ポップメロディーに、曲によって多様に様変わりするアレンジ、
少年の頃に、誰もが持っていたイノセンスを表現した歌詞。
どこをとってもとことんポップなのだ。

1曲目「Utopia parkway」の視界いっぱいに青空が広がるようなギターフレーズからして、
聴いているだけで自然と笑みが浮かんできてしまう。
「Red dragon tattoo」の歌詞には、ちっともカッコつけることのない彼らの等身大さが現れているし、
Weezerの「No one else」を思わせる「Lost in space」や「Denise」もそういったテーマを持っている。
「Troubled times」「Amity gardens」は、泣き＋ポップというスタイルを象徴する名曲。
ライナーにもあるが、この2曲を嫌いになれる人というのはまずいないだろう。
イントロはハードロックっぽいかと思いきや、コーラスでポップさ爆発の「Go,hippie」の詞では、
彼ら独特のユーモアがうかがえて思わず笑ってしまう。
アルバムの後半、「Prom theme」「The senetor's daughter」といったバラード曲もこなす器用さにも驚かされる。

何度聴き返しても、素晴らしい。というか、このアルバムは10年後に聴いたとしても魅力を損なわないだろう。
ビートルズの曲たちがいまだにポップとして全く色あせていないのと同じように。
チープでありながらきらびやかで、それゆえのイノセンス、等身大さもある。
ビー玉みたいに輝く、魔法のアルバムだ。

~ジャケットが特にいいデザインというわけではないんだけど、この爽快な空を見ると買いたくなってしまう。実際にこのジャケット通りのイメージが1."Utopia Parkway"で展開されてて、すごくいい気分でアルバムがスタートする。2."Red Dragon~~ Tattoo"は特におすすめ。普遍的なギターポップ・サウンドに下手するとダサいぐらいのキャッチーなメロディで、弱い男の悲しくもどこか共感を呼ぶ歌詞が、全体として「痛快」な感じでとてもいい。12. "Prom~~ Theme"なんかは間奏のストリングスがとても切なく美しく響く感動的なバラード。メロディに関してのキャッチーさへの開き直りがこのバンドの魅力かな、とも思う。アダム・シュレシンジャーとクリス・コリンウッドのギターポップ職人コンビが生み出すどこかにありそうで、でも唯一無二の世界が味わえるはず。~
