CSN&Yのスティルスが、72年に結成したバンド「マナサス」によるアルバム。オリジナルでは2枚組4部構成となっており、面ごとに異なるテーマで作られた。国内初CD化。

スティヴン・スティルスがクリス・トリマンらと72年に結成したマナサスの2作品が日本初CD化。LP2枚組だった1stは、片面それぞれに「The Raven」「The Wildernes」「Conside」「Rock&Roll Is Here To Stay」と副題の付いた4部構成になっていて、各面にスティルスの思い描く音楽=アメリカン・ロックの多様なスタイルが展開されている。(1)~(5)はスティルスのソロの延長上にあり、彼の魅力的なギターが活躍、カントリー・ロックの(6)~(11)ではCSN&Yばりの美しいハーモニーを聴かせ、(12)~(17)でラテン・ビートを取り入れたタイトなロックを披露、そして18曲目からはサザン・ロックにも通じるハードにドライブするサウンドを、といった具合にスティルスの音楽に対する旺盛な探究心、引き出しの多さがバンドという生き物の中で見事に結実した屈指の名盤といえる。73年発表の2nd『ダウン・ザ・ロード』も、ラテン(3)やカリプソ(9)など多彩な音楽性に挑戦。サウンド面でもジョー・ウォルシュ、ボビー・ホイットロックをゲストに迎え、ロック・バンドとしての力強さを追求するなど、スティルスの生真面目な性格がよく出た作品となっている。 (飯塚達弘) --- 1998年06月号
