もうすぐ新しいDVDが発売されるラッシュ。その代表アルバムといえばこの2112でしょう。始めて聞いたのが22年前になるんですが全然色褪せません。トリオでここまでの演奏をするまさにスーパーテクニシャンの3人。このアルバムの注目点は、二ール・パートの頭脳から書く歌詞でしょう。曲も勿論、プログレ特有の展開あり、変拍子ありなのですが、歌詞カードとにらめっこしながら聞くのも楽しいと思います。個人的には今も1番好きなアルバムですね。

プログレッシブ・ロックが一大ムーブメントとして
盛り上がっていた、１９７0年代初期の頃の流れの中で、
出現した、カナダ出身のバンドの一つではあるが、
ファーストアルバムを発表した後の、メンバーの入れ替えによって、
加入した、奇才ドラマー、二ール・パートがその後の
RUSHと言うバンドに多大な功績を残すこととなる。
３ピースバンドで、Gt、Dr、Bs、と言う普通のバンド
体系であるが、先の、ニール存在がとても大きいものとなる。
この人の、奇才ぶりは、まず、プログレと言うジャンルに
もっとも適したであろう、その超越した難解な詩の世界から始まり、
曲の構成、アレンジ面で、比類なき才能を見せ付ける。
そして、それに見合わせた、卓越したドラムさばきも見逃せない。
後から加入したにもかかわらず、その全権を掌握して
しまった事に、図々しさも考えられるが、
他のメンバーもこればかりは納得せざるを得ないであろう。
この、二ールの加入によって、方向性が明らかになった
このバンドは、「組曲」と言う、まぁ、メドレー形式みたいな
方法を取り入れ、元々のハードロックよりのサウンドを
うまく融合し、さらに、プログレバンドにありがちな、
実験的なその構成の中では、割とメロディも聴きやすく、
サッパリとした感じが、印象深い。
そして、４作目にあたるこのアルバムで、RUSHを世界的なバンドへと
変貌させるのである。
「組曲」としての、RUSHの作品の中でも、最も優秀なオープニング
ナンバー「2112」から始まるその宇宙空間に浮遊しているかのような
構成力は、素晴らしいの一言に尽きる。
全６曲という、少ない曲数にもかかわらず、
圧倒的ボリューム感のある超大作に仕上がって、聴く者を離さない。
ちなみに、現代における超絶テクニカルへヴィメタル
プログレバンド、「ドリーム・シアター」がRUSHを師と仰いでいる
という事を付け加えておかなければならない。
プログレバンドの中でもこのRUSHは実に聴きやすい部類の
入ると思うので、是非とも。
