ロネッツは、メンバー三名のそれぞれの頭文字をとって命名された。
６０年代アメリカのカリスマプロデューサー、フィル・スペクターの主催するレコード会社、フィレスを代表するスター。
フィル・スペクターはビートルズとも親交が深く。ビートルズのアメリカ初上陸には、彼らに請われて同行している。そしてロネッツは、ビートルズにとって、お気に入りの女性グループだった。
とりわけ、グループの中心であるロニーの力強いボーカルは、スペクターのおめがねにかなったものであった。
スペクターの作り出すサウンドは、「ウオール・オブ・サウンド」（音の壁）と呼ばれる重厚なもので、当時の未成熟な録音機材の可能性を最大限に引き出していた、と言って良いほど素晴らしい。
収録曲中、一曲目の「ビー・マイ・ベイビー」は、あまりに有名。その印象的なドラムフレーズを聞かせてくれるのは、ハル・ブレイン。当時の代表的セッションドラマー。
才能にあふれたプロデューサーの元に集った腕利きのミュージシャンたち、シンガーたち、そしてエンジニア。スペクターを中心とした彼女ら、彼らが作り上げた絢爛たるポップスの遺産。
その代表的な一枚が、この「ベスト・オブ・ロネッツ」ではないかと思う。
その後ロネッツは、スペクタ-とロニーの関係によって亀裂を生じてゆく。そして、スペクターと結婚したロニーは、次第に精神を病んでゆくのであった。
