   コンポーザー、バンドリーダーとしてのミンガスが不動の地位を確立した、56年の傑作。この作品を抜きにしてミンガスは語れない。タイトル曲は4パートからなる大作で、直立歩行を始めた猿人をテーマにした一種の標題音楽。「進化」から始まって、「優越感」「衰退」「滅亡」へと至るストーリーはなにやら世紀末的だが、これはミンガス特有のユーモア精神の表れ。
   ジャッキー・マクリーン＆J.R.モンテローズによるワイルドなサックスの咆哮は、原始のジャングルを思わせるものがあり、フリーク・トーンまじりのブロウが大迫力。弾くというより叩きつける感じのマル・ウォルドロンのピアノも強力だ。
   重厚なサウンドはオーケストラ的で、たった5人のミュージシャンによって演奏されているとは思えないほど色彩感豊か。怒れるベーシスト、チャールス・ミンガスはただ単にわめき散らすだけの不満分子ではなく、その激情を音楽に昇華するアーティストである。本作はそのことを世界に知らしめた歴史的傑作。もちろんベーシストとしてのミンガスもすごい。（市川正二）

これまでに何枚ものジャズの名盤を聴いてきたが、この曲、このアルバムを聴いたときに初めて、これがジャズなんだ、と思ったものだった。タイトル曲の物語のような展開は、この演奏の長さを全く感じさせない。洗練された小手先の技巧でなく、もっと原始的な荒々しい感動がある。例えば古代の洞窟の壁画を見て、現代のわれわれが感動するのと共通するような。音楽を言葉で説明しようとすることの虚しささえ感じる。

強烈な音楽にただただ圧倒される。しかし決して不快ではなく、心地よく圧倒される。その理由は、我々の体内に隠された原始のリズムに呼応するためか、それともミンガスの強烈なリーダーシップのなせる業なのか。いずれにせよ、あなたのジャズに対する認識を一変させ、ジャズの楽しみの奥行きを広げさせる一枚になるに違いない。

およそ半世紀前（'56）にこのような音楽が出現し、未だに名盤として古さを感じさせずに多くの人に影響を与え続けていることは驚異的なことだ。“直立猿人”を聞ける年代に生まれたことに、感謝したい。

ジャズ初心者の僕は、何の予備知識もなくこのアルバムを聴いてびっくりしました。１曲目の重たいテーマに加えて、時折クラクションのように鳴るサックス！
なるほど。猿人が直立歩行しよとする曲で、ジャングルのイメージだったんですね。

最初は「なんや、これ！」と遠ざけていたんだけど、なんか気になってもう一回聴いてしまう、そんな１枚でしょうか。
