ＭＪＱのライブ盤といえば「ヨーロピアン・コンサート」ということになろうが、この「ラスト・コンサート」も充実したできである。ＭＪＱはこの「解散」以後も何度も再結成されたが、残念ながら全盛時の緊張感を失っていた。
しかしここでは「ラスト」というシチュエーションが緊張感を生み、深い思い入れのある演奏を導き出している。

トップの「朝日のようにさわやかに」、そして「人知れず」「サマー・タイム」辺りが聴きもの。
ＣＤ化の際追加された曲も、それそれ聴き所を持つ。

ＭＪＱといっても、今の若い人たちにはぴんとこないかも知れない。それほど過去のグループになってしまったようだ。ジョン・ルイス（ｐ）、ミルト・ジャクソン（vib）、パーシー・ヒース（ｂ）、ケニー・クラーク（ｄｓ）からなる「モダン・ジャス・カルテット」の略である。結成当初は、ミルト・ジャクソン・カルテットと称していたそうだ。（それでもＭＪＱなのが興味深い。）
フュージョン全盛時、彼らはブラックスーツで、淡々と演奏していた。ジャズの室内楽といわれたものだった。
このアルバムは、当時ＬＰ２枚組で発売された。彼らの様式美の結晶がずしりとアルバムに詰まっていたのである。
解散後、トリオを率いて来日したジョン・ルイスのライブを聴いたが、決してピアノが上手ではないという印象をもったことを懐かしく思い出す。ただ、ひたむきにピアノに向かう学者然としたルイスを見ていると、ミルト・ジャクソンとは正反対の個性？であるが故にこそ、このユニットは長い間続いたのかなぁ、と思ったものだった。
