スタンド・バイ・ミーという映画を知らなくても誰でも一度は聞いたことはあると思われるほど、有名な同名の曲以外にもいい曲がたくさん入ったベストアルバムです。ベン・E.キング を知らない人でも十分楽しむ事ができると思います。

もはやスタンダードナンバーとなった 01. をタイトルにした
映画が大ヒットしてから編まれたベスト盤。
本盤では、かつて在籍していたドリフターズ時代の楽曲も含め、
アトランティック時代の代表曲が楽しめる。

60年代には、多くのソウルシンガーがＲ＆Ｂチャートの上で
しのぎを削っていた。
艶のあるグルーヴでオーディエンスの腰を揺らせていた
レイ・チャールズ。
貫禄たっぷりの歌唱で若き日のミック・ジャガーを魅了していた
ソロモン・バーク。
伸びやかなテナーと泣きのメロディでシーンをリードした
サム・クック。
破格のパワーとスケールでロックファンをもぶっ飛ばした
オーティス・レディング・・・。
そうしたシンガーたちと比べると、ベン・Ｅ・キングの作品群は、
ラテンフレイヴァーが入ったものも多く、ポップで聴きやすい。
人柄のよさがしのばれるような歌い方もダンディーな感じ。

ジョン・レノンのカヴァーで知った方に聴いて欲しい 01.,
日本では越路吹雪さんのヴァージョンが有名な 02.,
自分は山下達郎さんのカヴァーで知った09.,
70年代のファンクナンバー16.,
珍しい男性ヴァージョンの18. など、名曲多し。

心の奥のセンチメンタルな部分を刺激するような
流麗なストリングスのアレンジが耳に残る。
夏の終わりにおすすめ。

同名の映画に使用された「ＳＴＡＮＤ ＢＹ ＭＥ」を聴いていると、今は亡きリバー・フェニックスの若かりし頃の姿が瞼の裏に浮かんで来て、切なくなりました。何処か郷愁を感じさせるこの曲が色褪せるということは永遠に無いのでしょう。その他、オリジナル曲、カバー曲の全てに、ソウルフルで、時に力強く、時に優しく暖かい歌声が溢れています。ただ、曲によっては音があまりキレイではなかったり（古いので、しょうがない部分もあるのかも知れませんが）するのと、解説・歌詞は付いているんですが、対訳が無いことが残念でした。
