80年発表作品の再発盤。アルバム発表前に,アメリカ・ツアーが決まっていたにもかかわらずイアンは自殺してしまい,セカンドにしてラスト・アルバムとなってしまった。ジャケットが美しい。

私の思春期はこのアルバムと共にあった。
私の友人はイアンカーティスと同じ運命を辿った。
ピラネージの牢獄、古代ローマの廃墟、縋るべくもない「失われた時」。
このアルバムは奇蹟に等しい輝きを持っている。
土の中から掘り起こされた大理石。
最後の曲で我々はイアンカーティスの墓場へ導かれる。
大理石を望む若い人々（young man）よ、イアンカーティスの絶望なき絶望を聴くがよい。
このアルバムは絶望の向こうにある白い覆い布を表しているのだ。

Pop Groupと対局するものでありながら同じ時代を感じる、燦然と輝くアルバムです。

　今更このアルバムに、何を付け加えられるものでもないが、誰もレビューを書いてないので、失礼ながらわたくしが。

　ヨーロッパの中世では、常に苦しみ、病気、死というものが人の身近にあった。封建制のもとキリスト教文化が中心となっていた時代、人々が教会に行くと、神の子がその正しさ故に磔刑にされ、傍では聖母が悲嘆の涙を流す絵画や彫刻を見ることができる。そこにあるのは、庶民の人々に蔓延する苦役の癒しであり、慰めである。神の子でさえ、これほどの苦痛を負ったのだと。
　『クローサー』のピエタを思わす彫刻を写したジャケットはすばらしい。静謐のなかにある深い悲しみ。ゴシックの精神が野卑とも言われる現代のロックミュージックに甦ったというのだろうか？
　このアルバムにあるイアンの絶望や苦悩のシャウトは、巧みに美的に昇華されたもので、聴く者に無類のカタルシスを与えてくれる。バンド消失後に発表されたライブ作を聴くと、これらの曲がバンドの演奏活動のなかで新たなレパートリーとして生まれ、磨かれていったものだとわかる。「あの若者達は、いったいどこにいたというのか？」その絶唱に誰も答えることはできない。『アンノン プレジャーズ』よりも熱く、そしてディープに．．．。
　「ジョイ ディヴィジョンの傑作ともいえるセカンド アルバム」．．．そんな、ありきたりな表現を超越している

5.0 out of 5 stars 最後の２曲のためにあるアルバム, 2003/4/5
前作に比べ曲は意外とバラエティーに富んでいますが、このアルバムはやはり8「THE　ETERNAL」と9「DECADES」の２曲のために存在すると言ってもよいのではないでしょうか。JOY　DIVISIONの究極のイメージは、この２曲で表現されつくしています。ちなみに8と9をリピートで聴いていると、この２曲だけでもこのＣＤが成り立っていることがわかります。それだけこの２曲は、重過ぎて、深すぎて、悲しすぎます。
