   1987年までにリリースされたシングルのA面をDISC1に、B面曲をDISC2に収録したベスト的アルバム。彼らのシングルはアルバムに収録されていないものが多く、また収録されていたとしても曲のヴァージョンが違うとかミックスが違うとか、とにかくコレクター泣かせのグループなので、ベスト盤的とはいえ、このアルバムはファン必携のもの。代表曲DISC1<4>のオリジナル・ヴァージョンはこのアルバムにしか入っていないし、B面曲を集めたDISC2にも<12>などの聴き逃せない名曲を収録。もちろん初心者にも入門盤として最適のアルバム。（麻路稔）

ブルーマンデー、パーフェクトキッス等の彼等のヒット曲満載の二枚組。12インチに使用された曲を多く収録しているのでヴォリューム満点。どの曲も非常にメロディが美しく、哲学的でありながらポップさも兼ね備えているのが見事。エレクトロニクスを多用していた時代のニューオーダーが今となっては懐かしい。

初期から後期までの名曲を網羅した決定版とも言えるベスト。
ニュー・オーダーはこのてのベストが沢山出ているので
どれを買うか迷うところだが、私的にはこれが一番お勧め。
「blue monday」や「perfect kiss」などはdisc1とdisc2で
インストとボーカル有りを聞き比べることも出来て興味深い。
このアルバム全体を通して聴く事で、
陰鬱なパンクロッカーがサイケデリックなダンスミュージックを
作るようになっていく経緯が自然に理解できると思う。
憂鬱だったり社会的だったり、お堅い題材も彼らにかかると、
フッキーのリズミカルなベースやバーニーのへろへろした歌で見事、
踊れるポップスになってしまうのだから不思議だ。

ファンにも初心者の入門にもお勧めしたい作品。
ちなみに「perfect kiss」のボーカル完全収録版をお探しの方も、これです。

自分はこのアルバムを必ず無人島にも持ってくつもりだし、棺桶にも入れてもらうつもりだが、さて他の人にどうやって勧めたらいいものか。

４曲目の「ブルー・マンデー」が一番有名か。テクノ・クラシックにもなってるこの曲は、鬱とダンスが同時に一人の人間の中に共存しうることを世間に知らしめた。その時英国中に「根暗ディスコ」の胞子がまかれ、感染者が続出したのは言うまでもない。
３曲目の「テンプテーション」は以前ファンの好きな曲投票で１位になってた。この曲を聴くと「永遠を感じさせる刹那」とはどういうものか、ソウルフルとはどういうことか、音楽によるエクスタシーとはどういうものかが理解できる。
７曲目の「パーフェクト・キッス」は、そもそもデジタル・ロックという言葉はこの曲のためにあるような曲。プログレ並の構築美が徐々にアナーキーな破壊衝動の暴発へと移行していくという、８分間のサウンドスケープ。
10曲目の「ステイト・オブ・ザ・ネイション」。この曲におけるギターとベースの絡みこそ、白人ロックにおける最もファンキーな瞬間。国や政府に対する絶望に、憤怒の焔が紅蓮に燃えさかる。
12曲目の「トゥルー・フェイス」。現実との戦いによって袋小路に追い込められた全ての魂たちへの、最も悲壮な応援歌。

こうやって１曲ごとに解説していってもたぶん無意味だ。12曲で１つの大きな流れを持つ組曲のようなアルバムだから。その内包するストーリーは、「孤高のパンクバンドの亡骸がメランコリーとダンスを武器として、生まれ変わって生き延びる」だ。そしてそれは、私のような人間にとって哲学的な啓示であると同時に、「こうやって生き延びろ。」という手本でもある。きっと死ぬまで聴き続けるだろう。
