このアルバムは、このバンドの記念すべき日本で紹介された１枚目。テクノに人間味の加わった融合系、ロウテクかハイテクかわからない人間的な仕上げ。へたうまな人達。でも、彼らにはオリジナリティが厳然としてあって、それがこの１枚目から既に存在してるのが、すてき。今でも誰もがパクって、アレンジに使っている元ネタ集でもあります。テクノシーンのすべてに影響を与えてると言っても過言ではないでしょう。すんげえです。

「New Order」としてのデビュー・アルバムに当たる前作「Movement」では、イアン・カーティスの影を振り払おうとして懸命な彼らの姿が痛々しいアルバムでしたが、その直後にリリースされ、イアンの事を歌った曲「Blue Monday」が大ヒットを記録し、このシングルによってイアンの亡霊から解放されたかのように、これこそが彼らのオリジナルと呼べる、彼らにとっての大きな一歩といえるアルバムが今作ということになりましょうか。前作までにあった無機質でダークな質感が薄れ、シンセサイザーのサウンドを中心としたエレクトロ・ダンス・ポップへとシフトしました。相変わらずピーター・フックのベースは異常な位にブルブリと冴え渡り、バーナード・サムナーの、はっきり言ってうまいとは言えないヴォーカルも、このバンドの個性の核となってきた感じがします。「Your Silent Face」あたりに聴かれる流麗なシンセサイザーのサウンドは、アンビエント？と呼べるくらいにクリアーで美しいです。再発盤には本来は収録されていなかった名曲「Blue Monday」も収録され、お得盤となっています。正にターニング・ポイントを迎えた彼らの、初期の名作アルバム！

「movement」がＮＯとしてのファーストアルバム。この「権力の美学」は２枚目で、初期の彼らの代表作。テクノ色はまだ少なく、この後のシングル「ブルー・マンデー」「コンフュージョン」でヒップホップなどの要素を強めていく。ギターとベースを前面に出している時期の秀作。「クリスタル」「ヒア・トゥ・ステイ」でファンになった人、オルタナ系から来た人も是非どーぞ。
