ギリシャの画家エル・グレコに敬意を表した作品です。本作品は、もともと1995年に3,000部限定（『Foros Timis Ston Greco』）で、ギリシャの国立美術館を中心に売られていた作品に、新曲３曲をプラスして全世界リリースとなったものです。 作風は、もしかしたら国立美術館でＢＧＭとして流れていたのではないかというような曲調です。全体的に静かですが、教会音楽っぽい雰囲気のものもあれば、ピアノの旋律が美しいものもあります。
モンセラ・カバリエなどのオペラ歌手をゲストに迎えた近年作の名作です。

　クレタ島（ギリシャ）生まれのエル・グレコに対して、ギリシャ人であるヴァンゲリスが捧げたものであろう。
　知らなかったが、エル・グレコは通称で、意味は「ギリシャ人」一般を指すものであるとか。

　Vangelis作品は、結構持っているが、なかなかの名盤と思う。
　元々は、「Reprise（ベスト盤）」の中に収録されていた曲を気に入って、改めて本盤を買い直したというところである。

　本盤のバックグラウンドは、「Page of Vangelis」（http://www.geocities.jp/pageofvangelis/）によれば、「もともと1995年に3,000部限定（『Foros Timis Ston Greco』）で、ギリシャの国立美術館を中心に売られていた作品に、新曲３曲をプラスして全世界リリースとなったものです。」とのことです。

　静寂の中で、ピアノの旋律が陰影を持ってうねる「Movement 5」なんかはVangelis史上に残る名作と思う。
　なお、他にもそう思う人がいたからか、この曲は、NHKの「探検ロマン世界遺産」のコルドバ編（2008年6月28日放送）でメスキータ内でレポーターが案内を受けているときに効果的に使われていた。

　全然関係ないが、エル・グレコは日本には2点しかなく、その1点が、大原美術館に「受胎告知」である。「日経おとなのＯＦＦ」（2006年11月号）によれば、「日本にあること自体が奇跡　ドラマチックなグレコの宗教画」とある。
　一度見てみたいものである（もう1点は、西洋美術館の「十字架のキリスト」）。
