   ゴールド・ラッシュにわくカリフォルニアの街に、ぶらりとやって来た牧師姿の男（クリント・イーストウッド）。彼は街を牛耳る悪徳保安官一味、独裁を企む企業家ラフッドと対立。住民たちを救うべく、ひとり対決を挑むのだった。
   1967年に主演した『荒野の用心棒』以来、イーストウッドが得意とする西部劇の新作で、今回も監督・主演を兼任している。基本的な設定はそれまで彼が出演してきた西部劇と変わらないが、とりわけ1972年の『荒野のストレンジャー』との類似点がいくつか見られる。唐突に街にやって来る、銃の腕が立つ謎の男。そしてその男が悪を倒して街の人々を救い、また街を去っていく。その正体は最後まで不明なままだが、実は幽霊なのではないか？と思わせる演出。『ペイルライダー』で男が牧師の姿をして現れるのはそうした設定と、神の視点を持って人間たちの行いを見るという意味合いを匂わせている。（斉藤守彦）

クリント・イーストウッド製作、監督、主演の本格ウエスタン。
「許されざる者」も自然でリアリティーがあり好きなウエスタンですが、８５年度製作の本作のほうが一枚上かもしれません。アカデミーにノミネートされてもよかったかなーー。時代性かもわかりませんが、まだ評価がきっと低かったんですな、いやぁ、イーストウッドが進みすぎていたのかも。

ベストな１本！！録音も優れています。そしてキャストも飛びぬけて目立ちはしませんが自然で好感。

クリント・イーストウッドが、８０年代に発表した唯一の西部劇。町の支配者の横暴に苦しめられる採掘者たちの前に、謎めいた牧師が現れ団結を呼びかける。支配者が悪の保安官を呼び寄せたとき、牧師は自ら銃を取って戦いに挑む。『シェ-ン』でも採用された古典的な物語に、聖書のシンボリズムをちりばめた脚本と、これがイーストウッドとは最後のコンビとなった撮影監督ブルース･サーティズによる闇を生かした映像美が、落ち着き払った演出と相まって、静謐で鮮烈な世界を創り上げている。

西部劇ファンでも、熱狂的なＣイーストウッドファンでもない僕が観て、退屈はしませんでした。
映像が綺麗で、自然の山々や主人公が乗る白馬も印象的。
いかにも西部劇らしいストーリーは良くも・悪くも「裏切られなかった・・」と感じることでしょう。

ただ惜しむらくは、ＤＶＤは字幕で観てさらに日本語吹替えで観るのが楽しみなのですが、これは吹替えがありません。残念・・・（よってマイナス星ひとつ）
