4.0 out of 5 stars 艶麗な映像で綴るモダン上海の男女, 2007/3/14
　租界時代の上海を代表する女流作家、
張愛玲の傑作短編を映画化した作品です。
要所要所でドラマの映像に原文の抜粋を重ね合わせて表示する演出が取られ、
可能な限り原作小説に忠実に映像化しようとする意図が強く感じられます。
また、クリストファー・ドイルによる華麗な映像が、
東洋と西洋の美が融合したモダン上海の雰囲気を再現し、
原作小説の世界観を視覚的に構築する上で大きく貢献しています。

　ヒロインの「赤い薔薇」こと奔放でコケティッシュな人妻を演じた
ジョアン・チェンは、やや誇張気味の表情を示すことで、
自分自身に対しても「誘惑的な女」を演じているかの様な女性を
優婉に演じています。

　一方「白い薔薇」こと清楚で貞淑な女性に扮したグロリア・イップは
白塗りのメイクで無表情かつ寡黙な役をどこか不気味に演じています。
　しかし、彼女は実際のところ従順や貞淑と言うよりも、
自分の感情を表現する能力に極めて乏しい為
相手からの歩み寄りと理解をひたすら受け身で待っている様に見えます。

　トイレに籠もるなど奇異な行動は、
自分を理解し優しく扱ってくれない周囲への不満の表明と推察されますが、
そんな黙々とした異様なやり方が周囲から理解されるわけもなく、
逆に嫌悪や侮蔑を深めていく悪循環を映画は突き放した視点で描いています。
本編では男性のエゴイズムが中心的なテーマですが、
エゴの強い主人公ならずとも
彼女とうまくやっていくことは難しいのではないかと思わせられます。

　堅実な家庭人になった「赤い薔薇」と再会し
再び「紳士」になろうと決意する主人公のラストは一見前向きに見えます。
　しかし、互いの殻に閉じこもるだけで
相手の内面に直接踏み込むことをしない「白い薔薇」と主人公は
所詮どこまで行っても平行線で心が交わり合う事は決して無い様に思えます。
　作り手の意図に沿う感想かは不明ですが、
個人的には物語の後にもエンドレスに続く主人公の孤独を予感させる
虚しい幕切れでした。

正反対のタイプの二人の女性がかなり克明に描かれています。エリ-トの道を選んだために退屈な家庭生活となってしまう主人公。再会のシーンはおセンチでした。
