ストーリーの舞台は、農場主が「ここは戦争と関係ないところ」と誇るぐらいのどかなところ。若い女性３人が、戦争に若い男手が取られることを補う女子農業奉仕隊員として、働きに来る。ストーリーは、その３人を中心に、比較的のどかに進んでいく。しかし、この３人の人生がどのように進んでいくのかは、映画の最後まで観ないと分からない。

どんな出来事も希望を失わないならば好機になるうる、まさに「塞翁が馬」という言葉を示唆する展開になる。映画の邦訳タイトル「スカートの翼ひろげて」は、希望を見つめて生きようとする女性を称えるのにふさわしく、原題THE LAND GIRLS(女子農業奉仕隊員の意)より、数段すばらしい。

どの女性を賞賛するか、考えながら観ると面白いかも。ステラは、「何でこうなるの！」と運命を恨みたくなる展開に果敢に立ち向かっていく。これを、キャサリン・マコーマックが、力強い演技で、挑んでいる。レイチェル・ワイズが演じるアグは、ケンブリッジ大卒でオックスブリッジ語を話すキャリア志向も高い女性（他の２人から見れば、ちょっとずれてるお嬢様かも）レイチェル・ワイズは、野良服や質素な普段着を着ていても、さすがにきれい。『太陽の雫』（私のレビューを見てください）とは、また違ったきれいさで、同性から観てもあこがれる。プルー役のアンナ・フリエルは、この映画では、やや地味な役回りだったが、彼女らしいかわいらしさやいじらしさが垣間見られる場面もある。この３人に囲まれては、農場主のどら息子、ジョンも、きっと目移りがしたことだろう。

第２次大戦下の田舎町を舞台に、農業ボランティアの為に派遣された、それぞれ個性をもつ３人の女性の恋を中心にしたドラマ。上品な娘、知的な娘、奔放な娘の３人が、戦時下にもかかわらず、明るく前向きに生きるさまが、美しい田園風景を背景に描かれている。派手な戦闘シーンもなく、しみじみと味わえる映画。

三人の女性の性格の違いはとてもよく描き分けられているのに、物語の展開に関わるそれぞれの人間関係や思い入れがじゅうぶん描かれないので、感情移入できないまま（と言うより、時になぜそんなに安易に話が進むの？と違和感さえ禁じ得ない。）終わってしまう。
特に、ステラとジョー、フィリップとの愛の深まりやすれ違い（？）について、説得されないままラストシーンになだれ込むところは、美しいシーンだけにその消化不良が残念でなりません。
特典映像を先に見て、監督や役者の話から、そういうことを描きたい映画なんだ、と頭に入れておいてから見た方が感動できるかもしれない。
と言っても、決して難解な映画ではなく、映像的な演出、説明が足りないだけです。
映像、音楽はとても美しい。……だけに、返す返すももったいない。
