「キイハンター」「アイフル大作戦」「バーディー大作戦」に続く、毎日放送（TBS）土曜日夜９時枠は、
すべて丹波哲郎主演のによる東映アクションドラマでしたが、これらに続くその決定打ともいえる『Gメン'75』を含めて、すべて菊池俊輔が音楽を担当しています。
これ以前の前３作品は、コミカルなアクションの要素もありましたが（特にアイフル・バーディ）、
本作ではその要素は一切なくなり、ハードボイルドを前面に打ち出し、大ヒットとなりました。
当然、音楽もその傾向を受けて、「つかの間の安らぎ」といったテーマ以外はすべて、ハードなアクションの音楽を中心とした構成となりました。
これにより、本サントラ盤も菊池俊輔氏の真骨頂ともいえる「アクション音楽」全開で、アップテンポの軽快な曲が特長です。

CDにはTV使用のオリジナルBGMだけでなく、主題歌「面影」のしまざき由理の歌入り、モノラル・フルコーラスも収録。
ブックレットには、第１話から第２００話までの放映リストと、曲目録音の詳細なデータを収録。
（リスト後半は、ミュージックファイル２に掲載。）

音楽の菊池俊輔氏は、映画の音楽や人気テレビ番組、数々の長寿番組、高視聴率番組の音楽を担当されたことで有名です。
古くは、映画「昭和残侠伝」「兄弟仁義」「女囚さそり」「女必殺拳」などから「吸血鬼ゴケミドロ」「昆虫大戦争」、
アニメ「タイガーマスク」「新造人間キャシャーン」「ドラゴンボール・ドラゴンボールＺ」「ドラえもん」、
テレビ「暴れん坊将軍」「赤い疑惑」「赤い衝撃」「スチュワーデス物語」などなど、多数手がけられました。
特撮系では「仮面ライダー」「アイアンキング」「ロボット刑事」「電人ザボーガー」ほかも担当されています。

面影のテーマソングが好きで買ったことがあります
全編のサウンドトラックは　緊張感があふれ　それぞれの曲に
色んなシーンが　思い浮かびます　最近の　アクション映画は　軟弱なところがありますが　この時に書いた物語の作者は　反社会的に書き上げたものが多くあり　リアル感がありました　だから　一曲づつに力強いものがあります

時代が変わってきたこともあり　今と違和感もあるかも
