CATHEDRALの2nd。邦題はデカダンス、「退廃的な傾向あるいは既成の価値、道徳に反する美を求めた芸術」まさしくこの言葉どおりである。全体を覆う重く退廃的で絶望に満ちた音は世界を地の果てまで突き落とさんばかりの勢いを持っている、しかしその反面それ同等の美しさと流麗さを感じさせてくれるのだ。
CATHEDRALの新たなる歴史を刻む「violet vortex」を序章とし、名曲「ride」の印象的なリフでアルバムの始まりは高々と告げられる。キャッチャーなリフにどこか陽気さすら感じる「midnight mountain」哀愁が漂うメロディーと荒々しく攻撃的なリフの対比が印象的な「fountain of innocence」全体的に前作よりも「ロック」的な衝撃を与えてくれる。そして何より印象的なのがリードリアンの歌である、これまでのデス声ではなく「ちゃんとした声」で歌っているのである。独特のグルーヴ感を持つ歌声はCATHEDRALを唯一無二の存在として完全に確立してしまった。この声じゃなきゃ全然駄目だ？？！！って思うのは俺だけか？？？
ボーナストラックに入っている「a funeral request 1993」は前作の名曲をさらに名曲にしてくれた一曲、何が何でも必聴です。

CATHEDRALがこの２ndを発表した93年はアンダーグラウンドシーンが飛躍した年だ。特にイギリスのレーベルであるイヤーエイクからはこのCATHEDRAL以外にもCARCASSが名作「ハートワーク」を発表。同じデスメタルでいえばフロリダのDEATHが最高傑作「インディヴィデュアル・ソート・パターンズ」、MOBID ANGELの快心作「カヴァナント」、CYNICの伝説のアルバム「フォーカス」…などがクオリティの高い作品を続々と発表していった。

僕にとってはカルチャーショックを受け続けたこの93年の中で、頭一つ抜けだして見えたのはこのCATHEDRALの「デカダンス」で、このアルバムを聴いたときの驚きは忘れない。「ドゥーム・メタルって何よ!?」
スラッシュ系にはまっていたあの頃、速さばかりを追求していた僕にとって革めてHR／HMとは何かを考えさせられた。恐ろしくへヴィでそれでいて美しくコンセプチュアル。2の名曲「RIDE」やシングルカットされた4の「MIDNIGHT MOUNTEIN」なんかでもうお腹いっぱいなのに更にへヴィネスこの上ない6！そしてアルバム終盤になると大作主義のプログレッシブドゥームナンバーが続き、とどめのバラード10。文句の付け所のないアルバムです！

その後僕はメタルの歴史に興味を持ち、ますますハマっていきました。そんな思い入れのある作品です。
