　ガキの頃、たまたま洋楽ベスト盤があって、その中に「ヴィーナス」と「悲しき鉄道員」が入っていて良く聴いたので、懐かしくなって本ＣＤに手を伸ばした。
　女性ボーカルのマリスカ・ベレスの歌のうまさと、ロビー・ヴァン・レーベン（だったか）の曲作りの巧さがこのグループの売り物。

　オランダのグループと言う事で、聴く側としては何かエキゾチックな物を期待するところだが、確かにそう言う感じの曲もあるけど、そうとばかりは限らない。
　グループはアメリカ上陸後、あまり流行らなくなって解散した様だ。その後、マリスカはソロアルバムを出したそうで、出来たら入手したい。そう思わせるだけの魅力を持った歌手。

　ちなみに本ベスト盤は最後に、サンプリングと言うんですが、元ネタ「ヴィーナス」に「アワワワワワワワ」とか「シュカタカシュカタカ」などと言う効果音をオーバーダビングした近年のカバーバージョンが２曲収録されている。名曲を冒涜する行為だと、あくまで個人の意見ながら思う私はオジン？

　ビートルズが神としてあがめ奉られていたころ、僕はひとりひっそりとshocking blueのレコードを抱いていました。みんなは「変わり者」とうわさしていたとか。でもね、あのころのブルーはいけていました。欧米では「ヴィ-ナス」しかヒットしませんでしたが、何となく悲しげなメロディラインは、日本人ごのみの曲がたくさんあります。(マイナーだったため、みんな知らないだけ。)

「悲しき鉄道員」「悲しき恋心」「マイティジョ-」「ショッキングユー」「ホットサンド」等々、今でも色褪せてはいませんよ。

モー娘のラブ･マシーンの元歌。モー娘もそれで大ブレークしたんだから、やっぱり超名曲ですね。
