クリーム,ジミ・ヘン,ツェッペリンらのブリティッシュ・ハード・ロックとヴァニラ・ファッジ,ドアーズらアメリカのサイケデリック&ドラッグ文化の影響を色濃く反映したユーライア・ヒープはミック・ボックス(g)とデヴィッド・バイロン(vo)を中心として’70年に結成された。ブラック・サバスにも通ずるその悪魔主義的な歌詞がメロディアスな曲と一体を成しドラマチックに展開するヒープが開花するのは3作目『対目核』からであろう。続く『悪魔と魔法使い』『魔の饗宴』が彼らの頂点に立つ3部作であり,ケン・ヘンズレー(g,key,vo)の力に負うところが大である。そして’75年『幻想への回帰』までのセクションが『ベスト……』だ。

このアルバムを初めて聴いたとき。疲れ果ててしまうが心地よいものを感じました。その後、このアルバムでしかない体験「真っ暗闇でヘッドホンで聴くと魂の彷徨が始まり引き込まれそうな体験」をしました。時々、勇気を持ってその体験をしたいと思っています。

ユーライア・ヒープの第三作。日本では実質デビュー作か。本作では彼等の持つエネルギーを爆発させた圧倒的な迫力が光る。特に、キーボード、ギター、ボーカルを担当するK.ヘンズリーの活躍が光る。70年代のロック・シーンを代表するアルバムである。

佳曲は多いがやはり「Look At Yourself」が代表曲だろう。悪魔的歌詞を圧倒的なパワーで演奏し、独特の世界を構築するのが彼らの特徴だが、その特徴が良く出ている曲。アルバム・ジャケットは本曲を意識したもので、ジャケットを覘き込むと自分自身が見えるという仕掛け。当時の私は、歌詞の意味も良く分からず「Look At Yourself」の部分だけ口ずさんだものだ。しかし、これをどう訳すと「対自核」になるのか、今もって分からない。「July Morning」は全体としてはヘヴィーな曲なのだが、D.ビロンの優しいボーカル、K.ヘンズリーのキーボード・ソロを間に挟むなど、起伏に富んだ創りになっていて聴きごたえがある。「Shadows Of Grief」はレコーディングの際、メンバーが最も興奮した曲だと言うだけあって、ヘヴィーさと熱気に溢れた聴く者も興奮させる曲。

70年代のロック・シーンに確固たる地位を築きあげ、ファンに興奮を与えた傑作アルバム。

３０年以上前、おこづかいで初めてアルバムを買ったのがこれ。ケン・ヘンズレーはキーボーディストですが、アレンジ、ボーカル、ギターのセンスが良く、その効果が明確にこのアルバムに現れています。

バイロンとケンの、導入部でのソフトで美しいハーモニーから、最後には脳天をつんざくハイトーンの応酬による声の圧倒的パワーに驚かされる”自由への道”、ケンのスライドギターとミックのクライベイビーのツインギターがファンキーで緻密なリズムアレンジの上で絡みまくり、猛り狂う爆発力を見せる、”瞳に光る涙”など、このアルバムでは、ケンが主要メンバーを挑発し、良さを最大限に発揮させています。美しい”当為”、狂気の”悲嘆のかげり”も絶品。　いまだに最高のプロの味。
