1973年1月ELPは彼ら自身のレーベル、マンティコアを設立する。そして11月自身の5枚目のアルバムを自身のレーベルから発売する。それが本作である。
まさにやる気満々の時期に発表された本作こそ彼らの音楽性の全てが発揮された最高傑作である。特に5の『KARN EVIL9』の素晴らしさは最高でLP当時は表・裏に別れていてちよっと今一歩だったのが現在のCD化で連続して途切れなく聴くようにできるようになりより完璧なものになった。
H・R・ギーガーの奇怪なジャケットはLP当時は複雑な見開きになっていて実に凝ったものであった。機械と骸骨のカバーの向こうに現れるのはギリシャの三女性(Gorgons)の一人、眼を閉じたメデューサだ。音楽が始まった瞬間、彼らの音楽の中のメデューサは眼を開き、聴くものを釘付けにし、石にしてしまう。そんな暗示を秘めている。特にキーボード小僧にはまさに『聖典』といえるのが本作だろう。
僕の愛用しているジャンニ・ヴェルサーチの象徴もメデューサである。素晴らしいものは間違いなく相手を一撃でノックアウトてしまう。まさにそういうアルバムだ。

１９７４年。中学２年の時、友達がくれた。コカコーラのプレゼントで当たったのだという。「ジャケットが怖いし、頭脳改革されるのはヤダ」という理由からだった。我が家に来たそのＬＰレコードはそれ以来来る日も来る日も繰り返し聞かれるようになった。当時名作という意識ではまったくなかった。大人になってから様々なジャンルの音楽を聴くようになると、半ば馬鹿にして聞く機会もなかったが、ある日数十年ぶりに聞いてみてオドレータ！　な、なんだったんだコレワ！！　すべてのジャンルの音楽が凝縮されておる。これは単なるロックやない、オンガクや！と思った。メンバー３人にはただ脱帽するのみである。敬礼！

　シンセサイザーの貴公子、キース・エマーソンの最高傑作でしょう。「トッカータ」「悪の教典」は最高です。キース・エマーソンはクラシックやジャズから、私の最も尊敬する音楽家バッハからも積極的に学んでいたそうで、そこに基礎があるから混沌とした音楽のようであっても聴いていて心地よいのです。音楽の基礎のない人間がキース・エマーソンの真似をしても悲惨な結果に終わるでしょう。彼だからこそ可能なのです。おすすめの１枚です。クラフトワークやYMOもおすすめします。しかし、すごいですね。１９７５年の段階でこんなアルバムをたった３人で作るなんて。信じられません。
