ドイツのパワー・メタル・バンド、レイジが９３年に放った会心一発。個人的には次作「ブラック・イン・マインド」と双璧をなす彼等の最高傑作だと思っています。現在もメンバーを入れ替え活動を続けている彼等ですが残念ながら今作を超えるような作品は生み出せていないと思います。マンニ・シュミットが弾き出すリフも、スラッシュ寸前のピヴィー・ワグナーの怒りのこもった声も詞も総てが一級品。ガイド本でなぜ、本作ではなく2作前の「シークレッツ・・」が代表作として挙げられている事が多いのかが何時も不思議だ。曲、詞すべてが一級品。メタル史に残る名盤としての知名度拡大が望まれる作品。

　HeavyMetalSyndicate（ラジオ番組）で、Firestormを聞いたのが最初の出会いでした。
その炎は僕の脳天を付け抜け体の中にそれ以来Rageの虜となりました。
ピーヴィーの不協和音のようなヴォーカルも聴き込むうちに快楽となり、マンニの粗削りなギターもこのアルバムの疾走感に一役買っています。
　お勧めは1.Firestorm、3,Refuge、4,Raw Caressです。下の方とダブっていますね。

　Rageの醍醐味は曲の中でのギターリフです。試聴ではなかなか聴けないですが、一曲丸ごと聴くことで曲の構成の多様さに驚き、そして虜になります。

　後にMetalとClassicの融合を目指し始める彼らですが、この頃から楽器は違えどクラシックの要領で曲作りをしていたのかもしれません。

　ドラムは最近のレベルで考えれば肩透かしですがその分を差し引いてもお勧めです。
何年かして若いバンドがこの中からカバーをするのが目に浮かぶアルバムです。

彼らの歴史を大別すると、８９年「SECRETS　IN　A　WEIRED　WORLD」以降を初期、９５年「BLACK　IN　MIND」以降を中期、０１年「WELCOME　TO　THE　OTHERSIDE」〜が後期となり、９３年発表の本作は初期作品ということになる。

初期・中期・後期、そのどれもがそれぞれ魅力的な作品を産み出しており、順を追うごとに聴きやすくなっているといえるが、彼らの歴史の中で、もっとも彼ららしいメロディが堪能できるのは恐らくこのアルバムだろう。

荒くれだったパワー、スピードが、特異なメロディを伴って疾駆するスタイルはこのアルバムを持って一つの完成形を示していた。
＃３“Refuge”や＃５“From　The　Underworld”、＃１２“Raw　Caress”あたりは今聴いても魅力的なスピード・ナンバー。
マンニ・シュミット（ｇ）のセンスフルなギターフレーズも秀逸。

初期RAGEの傑作。
