ジャンル不明のインスト曲から始まる、deepersの実質上の1stアルバム。まず94年の時点でここまで先鋭的な音を出しているバンドが日本に存在していたという事実が恐ろしい。メタリックなフィードバックギターにマイブラ直系の甘美なメロディが微かに乗るというdeepersの必殺スタイルは既にここに完成しており、本作に収録されている『amethyst』、『your melody』、『summer days』、『blink』といった名曲群は今聴いても全く古臭さを感じない。coaltar of the deepers、彼等は間違いなく邦オルタナ界が産み落とした一匹の鬼っ子であり、世界に誇るべきバンドである。

9０年代初期、所謂インディーズブーム前夜、ニューキーパイクス、ビヨンズなど日本のH/C、UGシーンが強烈な才能、オリジナリティーを世界に向けて放っていた時代、COTDがメジャーでフルアルバム！！今では考えられないほどセンセーショナルな出来事でした。インディー盤ですっかり虜になっていた私は、無論発売日にこのアルバムを購入、私のROCK史において奇跡の１枚とはこのアルバムの事です。ファズ、ワウ等の轟音ノイズを魔法の様に操り、ネオアコ系以上のメロウなメロディーと、ここ一番に絞り出されるデス声、未だにこれを超えるalternative musicに出会った事が有りません。日本のロック史に残る名盤と思います。今聞いても本当に94年の作品なのか耳を疑うほど完成度が高く、その頃にコレを表現していた事が奇跡と思います。余談ですが１曲目はThe Cureのカバーなのですが、原型が無くCOTDらしい音になってます(笑)

重くのしかかるノイジーなギター・リフの1、原曲はキュアー。4はプリミティヴスのカバー。どちらもたいがい半端なシロモノではない。だが、これは序の口。彼らの音楽性といったら到底説明のしようがない。重厚すぎるほどのギター・ノイズ、しなやかに這うメロディ、かと思えばアルペジオの美しさ…だが根底にあるのは疾走感。この気持ちよさにハマッたら抜け出せない。オルタナティヴ?いや"ディーパーズ"である。
