　音楽よりも何よりも、派手な衣装が一番話題になったスペクトラムのデビューだったのですが、最初のコンサートツアーやＴＶ出演などを通じて、徐々にその独特かつ高度な音楽性、良質なエンターテイメント性が高い評価を獲得しつつあった頃に発表された２枚目のアルバムです。

　1998年の現在、ＴＶやラジオでBGMやジングルとして使われているのは、このアルバムの収録曲が一番多いと思います。彼らは、２枚目にして早くも彼らの音楽を集大成する圧倒的な完成度を持つ最高傑作を生み出してしまったようです。１枚目で感じられた曲の構成の弱さは完全に克服され、アルバムとしての曲の流れも完璧であり、収録曲７曲を一気に聴かせる圧倒的な魅力を持っています。また遊び心を見せる余裕も生まれ、まさにバンメとして上り坂の絶好調な時期に、勢いに乗って作り上げた素晴らしく魅力的な作品です。

　このアルバムには、スペクトラムの全てがあると言っても過言ではなく、全曲がお勧めです。比較的有名な曲としては「In The Space」「Sunrise」の２曲が収録されています。スペクトラム入門としても、最もお勧めの１枚です。

衝撃のデビュー作、「SPECTRUM」は、キャンディーズ解散後、自らのバンドを作ろうという意欲に燃えた元MMPの新田氏、兼崎氏、渡辺氏の情熱と、呼応して集まった新進気鋭の若手スタジオ・ミュージシャンの才能とエネルギーに満ちあふれた一枚でした。想像されるコンセプトは、アースやK&GやChicagoやゲロッパなど、ホーンを前面に押し出した、カッコイイ、ファンキーバンド(だと思う)。ゆえに楽曲のそこかしこに、各先輩バンドからちょうだいしたモチーフが見え隠れしてます。
少しずつテレビメディアにも露出するようになり初め方向性に自信を得たのか、1作目の勢いを失わずに、よりオリジナリティーが傑出した名曲がそろったのが、この記念すべき2作目「Optical Sunrise」ではないかと思います。
サザン桑田氏(当時所属事務所が同じ)の作詞(詞かな？)による、ファンキーなオープナー「Motion」ではバルブ・トロンボーンにラッパの唄口突っ込んだ(反則)サウンド・エフェクトに度肝を抜かれ、超変拍子ノンコード・ノートで始まる「FLY!」で月まで翔んだかと思ったら、ブラスロック・バンドのインスト曲にあるまじき、ドリフもビックリ、ポップなナンバー、「ミーチャン Going to the Hoikuen」で意表をつかれ、オーディオ製品とタイアップした、奥氏による摩訶不思議な宇宙的コード進行の「In the Space」(アルバム・バージョン)で盛り上がったと思ったら、一転、せつなくも美しいラブバラード「Song」で繋ぎ、のちプロレス入場曲などに採用された,アフロな長尺ロック・ナンバー「Sunrise」で締めるという、全７曲だけは少だけもったいない気もする、とっても一途で元気でやる気マンマンだった頃が伺える一枚です。お勧めします！
