ボビー・ティモンズはファンキーの教祖のように言われていながら、いつもどこか冷めた演奏をするのが特徴だ。ブロック・コードをたたみかけて聴き手を陶酔させても、本人はまったくクールで、ちっとも盛り上がっていない。何があったのか知らないが、どうかすると悲しそうな顔をしていたりする。しかしトランペットやサックスと合わさると、その冷めた感性がたまらない魅力になるのだ。だからティモンズがいたジャズ・メッセンジャーズは最高だった。

この『ジス・ヒア』はピアノ・トリオなので、ティモンズのクールさだけが強調され、ある種静謐な雰囲気が漂うアルバムになっている。

ここで改めて気がつくのは、ティモンズのソロの構成の見事さだ。どうもティモンズはどちらかと言えばアタマで演奏するタイプのようで、サム・ジョーンズの硬質なベースに乗って、よく練られた、理知的な演奏が連続する。"This Here"も"Moanin'"もまったく熱くない。しかしそれはつまらないということではなく、黒人音楽の核のようなものを見つめた、内省的なプレイなのだ。ティモンズの演奏は、黒人音楽の伝統に深く根差しながら、熱くも黒くもないところに最大の魅力がある。

このアルバムはもっと聴かれてもいい。特に"My Funny Valentine"は、涙なしには聴けない名演です。

J.M(ジャズ･メッセンジャーズ）やキャノンボール・アダレー・クインテットでの活躍で、ファンキー・ジャズ・シーンの立役者として有名なボビー・ティモンズ。ファンキーなタッチと名曲モーニンによって、そのイメージは固定化され、ファンキーとともに時代に埋没した観がある。しかし、このトリオによるティモンズは、同時に表現力豊かな優れたピアニストであることを改めて認識させる。昔ジャズ喫茶で時々このアルバムがかかった時にはなぜか安心した記憶がある。それはJMといった５管のバッキングだけでなく、ティモンズが一人のピアニストとして静かで力強いメッセージを送っているように思えたからであった。This HereやMoanin'に加え、Lush Life、Prelude to a Kiss、My Funny Valentine、Come Rain or Comeといったバラードやスタンダードが聴けるのがうれしい。ソニー・クラークやウイントン・ケリーの影に隠れがちだがもっと評価すべきピアニストの一人であろう。

当時ブルーノートと並び、黒人のファンキーな演奏のレコードを出していたリバーサイド・レコードからリリースされた一枚。１９６０年録音で、「まっ黒」で「濃い」黒人ジャズの代表作であるとともに、バップピアノのボビー・ティモンズの数少ないリーダー盤の中でも最高の一枚。サム・ジョーンズ（ベース）ジミー・コブ（ドラム）も、若々しい力のこもった演奏。「モーニン」は当然としても「マイ・ファニー・ヴァレンタイン」ですら軟弱さがみじんもない。ほんと５０-６０年代の黒人のジャズはいいね。（松本敏之）
