１９５５年リリースすか、まだ生まれてねええっす。漢文の授業のような古典ですな。がしかしこのグループはメンバーに『クラッシックコンプレックス』重症な人がいるのでなんだか『優雅＆お上品なジャズ』でやんすな。その人はジョンルイス。ミルトジャクスンのビブラフォンもおさえにおさえた演奏でやけに『宮廷音楽＝サロンミュージック』みたいね。ドラムのコニーとミルトジャクスンの相性はかなりいいかも。のんびり、ゆったり、ひねもすゆたりゆたりかな。なんだか寝てしまいそう。ピロージャズにもいいかも。ミルトジャクスンはやはりうまいっす。

パリはコンコルド広場をテーマにしたＭＪＱの最高傑作。楽団の中心となるヴァイブは、ジャズではマイナーな楽器である。そのヴァイヴを入れたカルテットで一世を風靡したＭＪＱのベストの一枚。ピアノのジョン・ルイスはヨーロッパへのあこがれが強かったようで、この盤以外にもヴァンドーム広場やベニスをテーマに据えたアルバムを制作している。それまで、ジャズに必須とされたアドリブ、インプロヴィゼーションを廃し、緻密なアンサンブルを聴かせるという手法は、クラシックの室内楽の伝統が強いヨーロッパで熱狂的に支持された。アンサンブルと透明な美しさあふれるミルト・ジャクソンのヴァイヴにうっとりする。しかし、ヴァイヴを入れたグループは、むずかしいようで、ＭＪＱに追従するジャズメンはいなかった。特異にして、唯一無比の音楽。（松本敏之）
