マイルス・デイビスの元を離れたコルトレーンは「ジャイアントステップス」によってシーツ・オブ・サウンズを発展させ、アトランティック・レーベルでひとつの完成を見せた感があった。その後インパルスに移籍してからさらに自己の世界を追究していった。エリック・ドルフィーとの共演などもそのひとつで、この異色のアルト奏者との共演を通してよりフリー・ジャズ、ニュー・ジャズへと接近したのであった。ベースはレジー・ワークマン。ジミー・ギャリソンの革新性はないが手堅いキープマンである。そしてエルビン・ジョーンズ、マッコイ・タイナーのリズム陣によってトレーンの音楽はさらに桁上げされていく。このアルバムはインプレッション、クレッセントと続く彼の精神世界への旅立ちがドキュメントされている。
